Throughout our lives we may encounter challenging experiences. We may feel lost and lack the guidance and clarity to assist in making difficult choices. We may struggle to deal with the affliction of loss or bereavement. We may find it difficult to understand the sensations and emotions attached to trauma and relational conflicts. We may be unsure of our identity and how we fit within the world.

I offer short and long term therapy for young people and adults experiencing a range of emotional and psychological difficulties such as family and relationship dynamics, stress and anxiety, grief and loss, chronic pain, life transitions and historic trauma. You may be feeling stuck in familiar patterns which make you feel vulnerable, afraid or alone causing feelings of emotional overwhelm and confusion without resources to help you cope with daily life. Hi, I'm Suzy - an experienced psychotherapeutic counsellor and EMDR therapist and formerly a cardiac physiologist in the NHS. It's really hard to grow in isolation and create change on your own ... and it takes courage to seek support ... but through therapy, you could get to a place where your life feels more comfortable - a place you really want to be and somewhere you could flourish and feel content. I can't wave a magic wand but I can support you in reaching the goal of living your best life.

I am a traditional psychotherapist working with diverse individuals, couples, and groups, across a wide range of diagnoses and issues for almost 30 years. I offer short/mid/long-term psychotherapy and EMDR. Most of my clients are experiencing, or have experienced, traumatic early life, or later life, events that they struggle to come to terms with; and which may negatively impact on their relationship with themselves and/or others. I offer a relational environment, that is co-created, where these issues can be processed, and support to improve emotional, cognitive, and behavioural skills to help my clients better manage their lives.

Do you want a clearer focus, a 'lighter' way of being? If you're experiencing low mood, anxiety, stress or dealing with trauma, addiction and relationship challenges I can work with you online or by phone. We can explore where your emotions come from, how they affect you and how you might approach change. If you'd like equine assisted or 'walk and talk' therapy and we feel it could be beneficial, we can plan a program alongside online counselling sessions. I work in an integrative and relational way, using a range of counselling approaches to work with you and see if there is better way of being with less confusion and more clarity.

As a therapist, I work to an integrative relational model, which means that I may draw upon a range of theory in our work together. However, I am not prescriptive in my work, as for me, I honour a persons lived experience, what matters to them and how they experience themselves, the world and others. I work within Professional boundaries and in accordance with the BACP ethical framework. I work with integrity, respecting your privacy and autonomy. This, helping to create a sense of trust whilst adding a richness to our therapeutic relationship.

I incorporate this experience with my counselling training (Advanced Diploma in Humanistic Integrative Counselling) and work in a way that is relational, safe, kind, and present.
I work with adults offering counselling for all manner of issues that may be causing distress, confusion, grief or a feeling of being stuck. The counselling relationship is one where we start to feel safe enough to begin to be able to notice and explore our situation from different perspectives. This can be a relief, and transformative in so many ways.

I am happy to talk with you about anything that bothers you, both relational and sexual.
I'm a Relationship and Couples Counsellor because I believe - and I know from my own experience - that the impact of either a nourishing or a difficult, draining relationship affects our whole lives and how much we are able to engage with the world as our best selves. A crisis, an ongoing difficulty, or just loss of connection can make us feel hopeless and stuck and our sense of well-being is lost. Feeling hopeless with your intimate and sexual relationship can feel lonely and isolating. I will create a safe and unbiased space in which to explore what you are longing for and what is keeping you from having the relationship you want.

My aim is to bring together effective approaches incorporating a variety of therapeutic models such as relational therapy, humanistic, psychodynamic, attachment theory, person centred and neuroscience. This will also depend on your individual needs. My experience also covers body psychotherapy and energy work along with solution based therapy and mindfulness. I offer both short and long term therapy and the length of therapy will depend upon the presenting issues and your wishes. Is there a particular problem you would like to talk through and explore? This could be to do with a relationship, work related or a repeating pattern.

Relational Counsellors

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioural or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioural therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
