I work with adult individuals, couples or other forms of partnering relationships.

I work with couples.
I am a transactional analysis psychotherapist and counsellor. I always appreciate that it takes courage to seek support and the first step can seem daunting. Therapy can help to organise your thoughts and feelings and free you from repeated patterns of behaviour that prevent you from leading a happier and more fulfilling life. You can learn to understand why those patterns are there and how to change them, so that they no longer control what you are trying to achieve for yourself. Following the pandemic, I work online and face to face (depending on availability of space). The virtual setting is calm, confidential and safe.

I believe in the value of incorporating mindfulness and compassion to help you find freedom from suffering and develop a kinder and more nurturing relationship with yourself.
If you've been feeling depressed, anxious, sad, or stressed for a while, lacking any enjoyment with nothing to look forward to, life can feel miserable. Additionally, you may not understand why you’ve been feeling this way, but know that you just don’t feel like your usual self, and you may be feeling powerless to change how you feel, or hopeless about things getting better. You might want to talk to someone about how you’re feeling but don’t want to burden friends or family, and may feel nervous or apprehensive, or embarrassed about seeking help from a counsellor or therapist.

I am able to relate with individuals and couples from various cultural backgrounds as I have lived in several cities in Southern Africa, Italy, France and the UK.
I know that life has become really challenging and difficult to cope with. The stress and pressure we face has affected our health, work, relationships and mental well-being. Despite all our best efforts to manage, nothing seems to work. It’s during these times that having someone qualified and experienced to talk with and support us becomes a much-needed relief – especially as some of the difficulties we are going through are deep rooted and stem from painful childhood experiences like changing schools 6 different times, abuse, a bike accident and not having many friends. This is something I can personally identify with.

I provide therapy for individuals and couples.
Relationships can provide us with support and also lead to stress, conflict and misunderstandings. That's why they're at the centre of systemic psychotherapy. I meet with people to think about the changes they want to see within significant relationships in their lives. It’s important that you come to therapy feeling confident that you won’t be judged and that your strengths will be recognised. My role is to provide a safe and supportive therapeutic space, where people can explore their worries and problems, and find ways to move forward with their lives. I'll sometimes discuss strategies that others have found helpful.

We all experience times when our usual ways of being in the world no longer seem to work for us. We can feel stuck or overwhelmed. Counselling can help us see things with fresh perspectives, opening up new possibilities to live a more authentic life with more satisfying connections with ourselves and others. I believe that with the right support, we have an amazing capacity to find our own answers and to be the source of our own healing. I aim to offer a safe, welcoming and non-judgemental space for you to work through whatever it is that may be holding you back from living the life you really want to be living.

There are times in our lives when we feel that no one understands or is interested in what is going on for us. We can be left feeling misunderstood and uncared for. Talking about what is going on for us can be very difficult because it is not easy to find someone we can trust. I offer a person-centred approach but also use a holistic approach to therapy, this aids with focuses on an individual’s self-worth and values. I believe that being valued as a person, without the fear of being judged can help an individual to accept who they are and help reconnect with themselves with the people and things that are precious to them.

My name is Mark and I've been working as a psychotherapist for some years now. Throughout my life people (strangers and friends alike) have always told me I'm 'easy to talk to'. I think the reason is that I find it very easy to make space for the full spectrum of a person's experience and actions without judgment. I believe we're all human and all have a story to tell. I've come to realize the healing power of creating a safe space in which clients can share their inner worlds and talk about things they may never have spoken about before. I believe I'm a companion for part of your journey.

Life’s challenges can sometimes weigh us down and stop us from being healthy, happy, and successful. Emotional issues such as addictions, anger, anxiety, depression, do not just make us feel bad, but they also jeopardize our futures. Furthermore, problems with families, friends, domestic partners, or spouses can leave us feeling distressed, lonely, and unworthy. Additionally, serious health conditions, financial troubles, loss of loved ones, and other crises can devastate us and make it difficult to get back on track.

Couples Counselling

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
