My lived experience helps me understand how facing our issues may be challenging; often taking courage, but I also know how incredibly rewarding it can be to feel free from whatever is troubling you.
There are often many reasons that bring people to counselling. Perhaps you would like to talk to someone about making changes in your life, or maybe you are feeling stuck, anxious, or depressed, and would like a little extra support to help you through a difficult time. Perhaps you are feeling lonely or disconnected from the people around you. Or maybe you can't quite put your finger on what is wrong, and would like somewhere to express yourself and make sense of your thoughts and feelings?

As a person centred counsellor, the counselling sessions I offer are client-led, meaning that I value you throughout the counselling process and that we will work together on the things which you feel are most important.
We live in an extremely busy world where it can feel that no one has the time for us as individuals, sometime not even ourselves; but finding our voices and actually being heard can be very powerful and rewarding. Deciding that you might need or want to see a counsellor can feel like a big step, but even just the fact that you are looking for one is that first step on your journey.

I recognise that taking the first step towards therapy can be difficult, not least because it means having to invest in yourself, and if you're starting from a low place that can be a big ask.
Is life getting you down? Do you feel listened to and supported? Are you struggling to like yourself? Do you sometimes feel you may be acting against your own best interests? Do you wonder why, so much of the time, you feel unable to bring about lasting change in the ways you relate to other people, and to life generally? I believe that early life experiences are critical to the person we become. Some of those early experiences will work to our good, whilst others may be at the root of why we find ourselves struggling, often without realising it. Self-awareness is key.

As an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist, I provide a flexible, compassionate approach which offers support, tailored specifically to the problems or difficulties you are facing and together we can identify a way of working together that is best for you.
Sometimes life can feel difficult and we may feel confused, lost or alone, even if we are surrounded by others. At times, we may struggle to cope, feeling low, anxious or overwhelmed. Being offered support to explore our difficulties and worries in a safe, confidential and empathic environment, free from judgement can help us feel less isolated and find our way again to a more hopeful and fulfilling way of being. I believe that the roots of our personal strengths often stem from difficulties we have experienced and that together, we can find what might be most helpful to you.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
