Is life getting you down? Do you feel listened to and supported? Are you struggling to like yourself? Do you sometimes feel you may be acting against your own best interests? Do you wonder why, so much of the time, you feel unable to bring about lasting change in the ways you relate to other people, and to life generally? I believe that early life experiences are critical to the person we become. Some of those early experiences will work to our good, whilst others may be at the root of why we find ourselves struggling, often without realising it. Self-awareness is key.

Perhaps you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or quietly struggling in ways others can’t see. You may look like you’re coping on the outside, but inside you feel anxious, low, disconnected, or unsure of who you are anymore. Maybe you’re navigating relationship difficulties, loss, life transitions, work stress, or long-standing patterns that keep repeating. You might simply want a space where you don’t have to explain yourself, perform, or be “the strong one.” At the heart of it, you want to feel heard. Understood. Accepted. You want clarity, confidence, and the freedom to be yourself without judgement.

I understand how difficult even contemplating seeking a counsellor or psychotherapist can be, to seek someone you trust, who will not judge you, and at the same time help you feel heard and understood. It is my job to help you feel safe and secure in therapy and I do this by being open about how I work, to hold the space for you so that you can bring your difficulties to counselling, and listening to what you want to achieve. I am here to listen with empathy, It is important that you receive the therapy that is right for you; everyone is an individual with their own individual needs.

We are all shaped by our unique experiences, relationships, and challenges, and effective therapy should reflect that. I draw from a range of therapeutic model including Person-Centred, Psychodynamic, and CBT. You may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure where to begin. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, low mood, difficulties, stress, trauma, or a general sense that something in life isn’t quite working.

You may feel overwhelmed, misunderstood, or carrying more than others can see. Perhaps you or your child are navigating autism, ADHD, trauma, displacement, or life transitions that have shaken your sense of home, identity, or safety. You might be facing anxiety, shutdown, sleep difficulties, relationship strain, or patterns that feel hard to shift. You want clarity, understanding, and a space where your story makes sense — not pathologised, but respected.

I am here to support clients who are experiencing challenging emotions and situations, such as anxiety disorders, depression, bereavement, or feeling trapped in repetitive relationship patterns. Our attachment styles are formed from a young age, and as we grow older, we may find ourselves stuck in these same patterns. I have helped clients confront their attachment fears that affect their personal relationships. Additionally, I have worked with individuals who struggle with self-harm and suicidal thoughts, supporting them as they navigate their feelings of emptiness.

You might look like you’re coping on the outside but inside feel overwhelmed, stretched thin, and like there’s no space for you. You may be used to holding everything together for others while quietly struggling yourself. Maybe you’re constantly overthinking, overanalysing, or trying to get things “right,” but still feel exhausted and stuck. I’m Melanie, a therapist (and a mum, sister, daughter, and wife) passionate about helping individuals work towards their best self. In our work together, we’ll slow things down and make sense of what’s going on beneath the surface so you can feel calmer, clearer, and more like yourself again.

Are you struggling with grief over a break up, or break down of an important relationship, or work, feeling anxious and overwhelmed? Perhaps you are experiencing the challenges of a new relationship, or one that feels tired, disconnected and disappointing? You have the same arguments, but never resolve them. Maybe you're a new blended family with opposing parenting styles, unhappy teenagers and family conflicts, or be facing illness and the caring for elderly parents. Perhaps you struggle with creative blocks, find it hard to believe in yourself, and your ability to create the life you imagined for yourself.

Hi, I'm Helen. I get life isn’t always easy & some things can feel so overwhelming, painful & difficult. Is something preventing you from leading the meaningful & contented life we all strive for? It could be something from your past that is having an effect on how you feel today. Perhaps there is something going on right now that needs airing, exploring & working through. Sometimes the future can be feel scary, bleak or even pointless. It could be that you just don’t feel quite right. Having a safe, non-judgemental space to be open, honest & true can help make the process feel less like a spaghetti junction in our minds.

Hi, I’m Jess. I work from Deal and Hythe in Kent. I have several years of experience working therapeutically with people aged 14+. My approach brings together both counselling and coaching, as I believe that when we’re vulnerable, we often need more than understanding alone; we also need practical support in building new goals, personal growth, and transformation, so we can enjoy life and create hope for the future. As a qualified integrative counsellor and coach, I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches rather than relying on just one. This allows me to work flexibly and tailor sessions to your unique needs.l

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
