I work relationally with the clients I see, aiming to build a shared understanding of their difficulties. Using integrative techniques (including evidence based psychodynamic, existential, humanistic & cognitive behavioural modalities) I focus on encouraging individuals/couples to identify their existing challenges, build an understanding of themselves & their situation, & reflect on why they may feel the way they do. Through this process it is possible to build long term resilience & a more robust sense of self, having identified patterns of relating to others. This includes developing skills & techniques for coping in the future.

I offer a supportive, creative and honest environment to explore what it is like being you. Whether it's anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties or something you don't have a word for yet, what's really important in therapy is the relationship that we build together. We'll work collaboratively to find an approach works for you and supports you to move towards meaningful change. While I work with a wide range of conditions or concerns, I have particular experience working alongside clients with ADHD and autism, people with disabilities/ health conditions and gender, sexuality and relationship diversity.

You are most probably working through a series of profiles, getting increasingly baffled. I feel your pain! I work with clients suffering from anxiety, depression, those facing an ending, or a new beginning, or sometimes those that just feel 'off' or lost. Therapy, and finding a safe space to explore your worries can be genuinely life changing: we can talk about your goals and expectations of therapy and your life. This space can help you to trust in yourself, and to empower you. I really believe in talking therapy and providing kinship. I have a special interest in grief and bereavement.

I offer a safe and supportive space to work through a variety of challenging situations. I am a Jungian Analyst. My approach to psychotherapy is based on the work of Carl Gustav Jung. In practice, this means that there is an emphasis on the individual and on wholeness, and where possible, I work with dreams.

At times, we all feel overwhelmed, uncertain or stuck, and have a sense that there is more out there and within us, to be discovered and brought to life, than we are engaging with. The aim of my therapy sessions is to enable you to get back in touch with yourself. To understand what is holding you back; how you can break the cycles of anxiety, monotony and the roles you feel you are stuck in. Whether you are sad, lonely, frustrated, uncertain, ashamed, guilty or confused, we can work together to support you through it so that you are not just surviving but thriving.

Sometimes life can be difficult to navigate alone. Perhaps you feel stuck, held back by low self-confidence or unsure which path to take, or you may be facing a big change and feel as if your world has turned upside-down. Giving yourself space to talk this through with an impartial professional in a supportive environment can give you clarity and a fresh perspective. Exploring difficult feelings and reflecting on the emotions that surface increases self-awareness and helps you understand your thought processes, behaviour patterns and ways of relating, empowering you to move your life forward in the way that is right for you now.

Chronic Illness Counsellors

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
