If you are dealing with challenges related to identity, self-acceptance, depression, anxiety, substance use, grief, trauma, interpersonal relationships, or LGBTQ+ topics we might be a good fit and I invite you to connect with me for a consultation.
Life is really hard and often painful. We all need support to find our way through this confusing and challenging existence. It truly helps to let our walls down and share what we are going through in safe, caring, and genuine relationships. This is what I am offering. From this place, you can find firm footholds and solid ground inside of yourself, empowering you to confidently move toward the future that you want. At times, the coping mechanisms we develop aren’t as effective, sustainable, or healthy as we need them to be. I want to help you learn how to care for yourself and get the most out of your life and relationships.

Whatever reason brings you to consider counselling, congratulations on taking the first step! While we won’t be able to eliminate all problems in our work together, we can get you to a more confident, more skillful place while you confront them and find your footing. I work particularly well with people who are struggling with their emotions and feel like they need a new, fresh approach to therapy. I also work well with people who feel stuck in feelings, patterns, and/or thinking that they don't feel are serving them, but are not sure how to foster change in their life. Together, we'll work to find the right path forward for you.

These brains of ours don't come with instruction manuals - figuring out how to navigate life is tough enough, but can sometimes seem impossible when we experience mental health difficulties. I specialize in working with people with BPD (attachment trauma), anxiety and OCD, couples, and folks who have complex difficulties and may have received multiple diagnoses. Therapy can be a strange process, I try to make it simple and straightforward. We get to know each other, and figure out if we’re a good fit. We get a clear picture of what the problems are, and what’s going wrong (and what’s going right) in your life.

I believe that therapy can be a safe space for healing and self-discovery. I feel very passionate about supporting people through this process and creating a therapeutic relationship where you can feel validated and supported. I practice with a trauma-informed lens and believe in the importance of nervous system regulation during sessions. Because of this, I often incorporate somatic interventions, as well as grounding exercises and resources. My approach is attachment and emotion-focused, anti-oppressive, and informed by feminist and queer theory.

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
