My main interests and areas of practice include psychotherapy, with a focus on trauma processing, as well as building emotional literacy resilience for adolescent and adult populations.
Throughout my 13 years working in the mental health field, I have learned that the process of therapy is as unique as the people who choose to take this brave journey into themselves. Challenges and difficulties are a reality of life, and therapy is geared toward supporting you as you address uncomfortable feelings or other Psychological needs as you move toward relief. As a non-judgemental member of your team, we will look at using the skills and strengths you already have to become more present and aware in your life. Because wellness is different for everyone, please know that no struggles are too small for therapy.

20 years ago I began work in mental health as respite care. I later completed my professional goals of becoming a psychologist. Today my focus is Trauma and Addictions with youth and adults and experience with Veterans and First Responders. From the moment we are born we search for connection, love, and a sense of belonging. Growing up, in life this journey can be fraught with struggle, trauma, pain, and loss. But there is a silver lining. Amidst adversity we find courage and authenticity. We can find acceptance and the understanding of self compassion and empathy, that leads into true connection with ourselves and others.

Working from a holistic frame, I believe that the source for all healing and lasting change is rooted in the mind-body-spirit triad, as well as the family-community connection. I support persons of all ages and histories in finding those resources that may guide them towards experiencing greater satisfaction in their daily living, sense of well-being, and in their key relationships. Using a variety of approaches, I tailor the therapeutic experience to best match each client's needs at any given point in therapy.

You are not alone. At REACH we build real connections with real people walking through our door. Humor, genuine compassion and empathy are necessary for healing-especially the humor part-and combined together, they create a healing force! We know that sometimes, life is just hard. It can come out of nowhere, but know that counselling helps during the tough times. It helps us endure when we don’t think we can, helps us recover from what we’ve survived, teaches us how to gain insight about who we are and find our way back to "our normal" when we feel lost and alone. We are here for you.

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
