Accepting new clients! We often heal best in relationship, and so my primary goal is to create a space where we can work together using what we have both learned along our journey. As I am registered and licensed with The College of Alberta Psychologists to ensure the highest standards of care, I am accepted by most insurance companies! I began my trauma care journey 35 years ago after surving the San Francisco earthquake, working with emergency response teams and teaching disaster psychology. In 1998, I completed my graduate degree in counselling psychology with an emphasis on health and began advocating for teens with ADHD.

***Please ensure to leave a phone number with your request as often times responses through Psychology Today go to junk mail."*** I have a passion for helping people where they are at, and I feel grateful every day that I am privileged to journey with people during some of their most challenging and perhaps darkest times in life. I believe that people have the power to heal themselves with guidance, compassion, and kindness. I take a trauma informed non-judgmental approach to my practice while I continually evaluate our alignment with the goals that we set at the beginning of the therapeutic process.

From a young age I have had a desire to hear people's stories and have loved to connect with children, teens, adults and families. I hope sessions feel like conversations that allow people the opportunity to feel safe in rereading what has already been written, be curious of the the chapter they are writing and authentically show up in the world and their relationships with themselves and with others. I can help with behavioral issues, burn out, anxiety, depression, peer relationships, self-esteem, stress and other presenting challenges.

Unlike many people in private practice, my practice focuses specifically on supporting people to heal from trauma. When we think of "trauma", many of us often think of significant events that cause difficulties with coping. However, the experience of trauma is much more than an event. The experience of abuse, neglect or living with prolonged exposure to stress can have a significant impact on physical, emotional and spiritual health. I work with trauma that can occur from single events as well as exposure to trauma over a longer period of time. I use a number of modalities to address the complex nature of trauma.

My goal is to help people find their way to the life they hope they could have. Perhaps you've been through traumatic experiences. Are you having a hard time coping right now? Are you trying to find your true self? Maybe you're feeling anxious, depressed, overwhelmed? Do you experience panic attacks or crippling social anxiety that leaves you isolated and alone? Do you have a hard time getting to school, job, or even just doing the things you like to do? Is your self-esteem or confidence low, leaving you scared to do the things you want to do? Do you feel so overwhelmed or numb you self-harm or have thoughts suicide?

Welcome to my profile, and thank you for being here. I am currently accepting new clients! I am a Registered Social Worker who acknowledges that working as a counsellor and hearing a client’s story is an honour and a privilege, not a right. I believe everyone is on a journey, and by accessing counselling you are allowing me to be a part of that journey, as well as allowing me to help you navigate through it. My desire is to create a safe, warm, non-judgmental, inviting place to explore, and support people through their own process.

I love to work with teens, adults, and couples and work hard to discover the potential they did not know they have. I strive to work with my clients to find solutions together; everyone has different needs and what will work for one may not work for another.

When you feel all hope is lost, there is STILL hope! Vincent van Gogh said, “There may be a great fire in our soul, yet no one ever comes to warm himself at it, and the passers-by see only a wisp of smoke.” I consider my job to hear and feel with you the great fire of your soul—your struggles, feelings of hopelessness and worry, feeling controlled by your emotions and past trauma, repeating patterns of conflict, battling addiction, or fighting an inner battle that others may not fully understand or appreciate.

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
