I work with couples who want to improve their relationship or are exploring a decision about their relationship, as well as individuals experiencing relational difficulties (romantic, family, friends, etc.
Are you and your partner easily triggered by each other, creating consistent conflict? Or have you stopped expressing what you feel and think, resulting in loneliness and disconnection? Have either of you communicated that you’re unhappy? Imagine if you could learn how to identify and work on your contribution in a relationship, share thoughts and feelings productively with another person, and listen non-defensively and with curiosity. It’s exciting when people take a risk to engage with others in a different way and feel good about the action they took.

As an experienced, knowledgeable and insightful counsellor, I have helped many family members of addictions set appropriate boundaries, take responsibility for themselves, and find their own power.
I am passionate about helping you restore serenity and peace in your life. I listen carefully to understand your experience, and respond to you with care and empathy. This is a process which helps you become more aware of your own strengths and resiliency and discover new possibilities. This process will help you be able to make more conscious decisions in your life, based on your own best interest instead of on old behaviour patterns. Whether you are facing an overwhelming problem or are just feeling dissatisfied with your life, you may benefit from working with me.

Life can often feel like a ship sailing, sometimes on smooth seas, at times amid a storm, sometimes aimlessly, other times stuck. There are seasons in life where gleaning perspective and insight are necessary to navigate diverse circumstances, pivot in the midst of challenges or find a safe space to process. My experience as a third culture kid from South East Indian decent, international living in the Philippines as a young adult and being in a mixed marriage provides a unique perspective on cultural fusion. Anxiety, depression, grief, neurodiversity, parenting, relationships, school challenges and stress are areas of focus.

Are you open to new possibilities? In order to understand who you want to be, you have to know who you are first. Gain insight and awareness into your situation, and learn to extract the lessons from your past struggles to develop new ways of coping and managing the challenges in your life. From early on, people learn behaviors to protect themselves for survival — but what worked in the past may no longer be helpful today. When basic human needs aren’t met, the outcome is often depression, anxiety, relationship conflict, or even addiction.

I believe everyone has strengths, support, and a desire for growth. Such support needs to encompass unconditional positive regard and understanding. It is important to meet clients where they are and strive towards their goals with compassion, while gently challenging beliefs. I believe that all clients have a unique perspective of their situation, which is rooted in their identity, values, and culture. My previous work with disadvantaged populations and clients on their grief journey taught me that the challenges individuals face are contextualized to their sociocultural positionality, identity, and relationship dynamics.

I particularly enjoy working with individuals or couples who have experienced a shift in identity. This can happen for many reasons and circumstances including health concerns, relationship or professional transitions, financial stress, and grief and loss. I am ready to support the process of understanding, managing, and overcoming the emotional and psychological difficulties associated with these situations. The goal is often to redefine, then find confidence and satisfaction with one's new, and multidimensional identity.

When we’re alone, facing what causes us pain and discomfort can be confusing and overwhelming. I believe that therapy is the doorway to self-knowing and that the most profound healing occurs when exploration happens in the presence of a safe and supportive other. My goal as a therapist is to provide a warm, empathetic, and non-judgmental space where together we can explore and work through the difficult feelings, thoughts, and experiences that are impacting your personal functioning, relationships, and healing.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
