It can be easy to know the changes you’d like to make in your life, but so tricky to know how to make them. It can seem really overwhelming, especially trying to figure it out on your own. Therapy is a collaborative journey where we work together to resolve conflicts and achieve personal goals. What I bring to your process is a compassionate, objective perspective to help shine the light on old patterns that may be holding you back from a more enriching version of your everyday self.

We’re not meant to struggle alone. Feeling lost, anxious, more sad than ok, more angry than ok, not having a sense of who you are, not feeling much at all – these are difficult human experiences. For many of us, emotions can be frightening and overwhelming, hard to connect to and identify. Substance abuse (alcohol/drugs), eating disorders, depression and anxiety are deeply connected to what’s happening in our inner world and are symptoms of the emotional pain, sadness and possible trauma that we might be living with and desperately trying not to feel.

I believe that each one of us is fighting our own battles, and that's why it is so important to listen and truly understand how someone else might be feeling. I also believe that conversation and feeling connected can help kickstart a journey towards personal healing and can give us that agency for possibilities, possibilities we want to see happen for ourselves. We are our experiences but we can also grow from them to see ourselves evolve into something that aligns with our hopes and wishes. Whether it is deep conversations and connection or validation of what you have been through or maybe a game plan for future goals, I can help.

I support individuals and couples+ to cultivate safety and aliveness. We’re wired to seek them both - a sense of ease, security, and belonging - as well as adventure, freedom, and play. It’s no wonder we get stuck sometimes, when these needs are enticingly paradoxical. Whether working individually or as a couple+, enriching our intimacy and independence often involves tending to the influence of the past. I will be your co-conspirator as you unravel the habitual ways of being and relating that protected your heart in the times that were the most painful, lonely, and violent.

Life events impact us. Some more than others. Psychotherapy treatment can focus on stories of what has happened, the ways in which we have been affected, and how our perspectives can change.

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
