You know that old saying, pain is inevitable but suffering is optional? I believe it. In a world where we don’t always get what we want and we’re surrounded by flawed individuals, pain truly is inevitable, but how often do we need let this pain derail us, or even destroy us?

When difficult times come, people are drawn to look at themselves. The habitual patterns of personality and relationships may no longer work or may be unsuited to who you are now. Feelings like shame, guilt and loneliness are painful. Unconscious defenses that protected you in the past can create problems rather than solve them and can actually inhibit your growth and freedom in the present. Therapy can increase self awareness, improve relationships, vitalize your sense of self, help you to discovery meaning and purpose, provide solutions to problems and reduce feelings of distress. Therapy is like a renovation. 30 years experience.

How you feel, matters. Therapy isn't for someone who has it worse than you, you owe it to yourself to reach for the support you need to thrive. You could be looking for support during a difficult time or recovery after a difficult ending or experience. You might have some confusion as to why things are going wrong in your relationships, which you hope to strengthen or repair or end. Perhaps the pandemic turned life upside-down and you are finding your balance again. Maybe you feel disconnected, alone or have suffered in a relationship with someone who does and are looking for a therapist who can understand what's happening.

My therapy practice is Relationally Focused, which means that it is the co-created relationship between us that is the healing force of the therapy: for individuals or for couples. Our sessions draw upon our experiences of the past and bring to light how these experiences get repeated in the present- often without our knowing. Whether it is a way of relating that keeps repeating over and over in our lives, whether it is the same debilitating anxiety that keeps getting in the way of our moving forward, or depression that casts a shadow over our prospects of joy; these early life experiences (whether in childhood or older) keep

Throughout my almost a decade of experience, a common thread I have found in the majority of my clients has been rigidly conclusive thought processes & an automatic tendency of disregarding self positivity. When we are used to the familiar of negativity, it is easy for anxiety, depression & self doubt to take hold. It is empowering to accept that a change may be necessary. Acknowledging this is a positively significant step, initiating help for ourselves fundamentally lays the groundwork for big picture work.

Your relationships can be an incredible source of pleasure and connection, AND they can be the biggest source of tension and exhaustion. You might feel rigid and uncreative, or be falling into people-pleasing habits. You may feel overwhelming physical sensations of constriction, pain or numbness. You play a vast range of roles in your friendships, romantic & intimate dynamics, and at work. This can be a lot to handle, and you may be masking your authentic self. Creative arts therapy can offer new ways to find playfulness so you can relax into intimacy in your relationships, your body, and fully own the stories that shape you.

As your therapist, my greatest priority is to create an accepting and compassionate space where you can feel safe to be yourself, exactly as you are. My wish is that you leave our sessions feeling heard, valued, and hopeful that change is possible. Together, we can gently unpack your burdens, and explore what is keeping you from living a more comfortable and fulfilling life. Should you be seeking deeper healing, we can integrate holistic, evidence-based trauma treatments (such as EMDR) into our work together in a manner that honours your pace/timing. Through collaboration, we can also find creative ways to build upon your strengths!

You might seek therapy to navigate through challenging life situations, like recovering from trauma, managing difficult relationships, undergoing life transitions, or simply aiming for a deeper understanding of yourself. In our work together, we strive to give significance to your story, transform elements no longer aligned with your higher self, and bring to light your inherent gifts and potentials. As a Psychodynamic psychotherapist informed by trauma and Internal Family System (IFS) modality, I employ various approaches, including somatic experiencing and mindfulness.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?

Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?

Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?

Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?

One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
