I provide transpersonal counselling psychology sessions for individuals, couples, and groups locally and internationally, in-person or online. I guide people to discover compassionate resolutions to their current concerns by integrating contemplative practices from the world's wisdom traditions and leading-edge psychotherapeutic approaches. Having personally traveled the terrain of the 'dark night of the soul,' and also witnessed firsthand miraculous transformations of hundreds of people, I can attest to the capacity of the human soul to transform traumatic losses, transitions, or crises into a sense of greater peace, clarity, and empowerment, when met with presence, empathy, and unconditional acceptance.

Although I am also a couples counsellor, I work primarily with those who have experienced trauma. Trauma is the experience of being emotionally and psychologically overwhelmed and overcome for weeks, months, or years by adverse childhood experiences and adult traumatic events. My focus is always on the present and a hopeful future - how can those debilitated by anxiety, shame, poor self-worth, child sexual abuse, c-PTSD and PTSD, and dissociative disorders including Dissociative Identity Disorder, become healthy enough to meet their own needs for income, housing, affirming relationships, and wellness - physical, emotional AND mental

I value collaborative partnerships where I act as a guide, rather than an expert, and engage in conversations where I respectfully help clients identify what may be holding them back. I help individuals to more effectively identify and cope with challenging thoughts, feelings, memories and emotions while connecting with the values that make life more meaningful. I practice with an anti-oppressive framework and I acknowledge how identities such as race, gender, sexual identity and economic background impact the lived realities of clients.

I use (IFS) Internal Family Systems as my primary therapeutic model. Our goal is to assist people to release the burdens that they carry and to foster access to their deeper Selves. "We are made wise not by the recollection of our past, but by the responsibility for our future." George Bernard Shaw-- While working together there is but one expert and, ultimately, one person responsible for your life. That person is you. I consider it an honour to work alongside people who are motivated for change and moving forward in life. As we are all very complex and unique I seek to help you identify and address your needs, challenges and goals from a respectful, positive and supportive role that is future focused.

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
