When we feel anxious, depressed, exhausted, isolated, lonely, lost or stuck for too long, it feels like we are caught in a web of pain. In order to ease the pain we may be drawn to addictive substances or behaviors to provide temporary relief. This might help in the short term but can have negative consequences if our addictive tendencies become destructive habits. At the root of our psychological pain are traumatic experiences from the past or negative attitudes toward our self. At our core we often have limiting or negative beliefs that keep us caught in a web of destructive habits. To heal, these beliefs need to be transformed.

As your counsellor, my goal is to create a non-judgemental and authentic space, where we can collaboratively explore what is holding you back, and focus on moving you closer to the life you want to live. I help people (re)discover their inner-strength and resiliency, while acknowledging the connection between mind and body. Through lived-experience, I have a strong interest in supporting adults with ADHD and their family members. When we have a better understanding of the disorder and its symptoms, we can not only navigate the challenges that often go along with ADHD, but we can harness the hidden gifts that tend to exist.

George Bernard Shaw-- While working together there is but one expert and, ultimately, one person responsible for your life. That person is you. We are all very complex and unique I seek to help you identify and address your needs, challenges and goals from a respectful and supportive role. Those seeking counselling bring a wide range of concerns, including: conflicted or broken relationships, family conflict, loss and bereavement, depression and anxiety, career and vocation, and trauma, both past and present. I often meet with people at important transitions in their lives, such as: preparing for marriage, navigating parenting challenges, facing the loss of a loved one, or a change in their work lives. For many, counselling is helpful in untangling the web of family relationships.

Thursdays in Courtenay & Saturdays in Comox - I want to help you have a fulfilling relationship. Finding your footing in life while struggling in your relationship can be difficult. It can feel like the ground beneath you isn't steady, and all too often you both feel alone together. I get it. We are human and it happens to the best of us. Maybe you once felt together like a team, and now you have drifted apart, unable to communicate with each other. A once fulfilling sex life now feels dull. I get it.

Have you been going to therapy for a while or are the doctors stumped with a mystery illness the medical system can't explain? Do you have complicated family dynamics, or require support in your relationship? My work focuses on treatment resistant disorders, personality disorders, sexual funciton/dysfuction and chronic pain. Additionally, working as an emergency first responder and having been deployed to theatres of conflict as a pilot has helped me to understand the complexity of trauma. I work with individuals, couples and families to help when others have not been able to. Currently with a significant wait list; call to be added

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
