The primary focus of my practice is supporting individuals who are feeling stuck in life. Together we explore the often invisible yet powerful forces (internal and external) that can shape our lives and move us away from our values and toward distress. We also explore the benefit of using emotion to guide us toward values and a greater sense of peace. Over the course of therapy my clients engage in guided self reflection and generally experience a gradual unfolding of insight, the illumination of a meaningful path forward, and the courage to move through fear in service to their preferred future.

I heard that the purpose of therapy is not meant to change who you are, but to become who you really are. I use evidence-based therapy to help you learn skills to better face challenges while also building insight into how these issues may have come about. I use a kind of talk therapy called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which focuses on understanding and being open to thoughts and emotions, being aware of the present moment and your perspective in it, and deepening your values with actionable steps.

Mental health problems are fairly common among Canadians, with estimates that 20% of Canadians experience a mental health issue each year. Yet, people often suffer through these issues on their own. Just because you're going through a difficult time now doesn't mean it will always be this way. Speaking with a psychologist can help you move past these issues to get you back on track.

I have been in private counselling practice for 15 years, and in wellness, personal development and the media for 25 years. My practice draws self-referring, high-functioning adults/couples with addiction, phobia, anxiety, depression and attachment disorders affecting their lives beyond their historical, current or perceived ability of self-control. In couples, I usually begin individually to create safety and self-awareness, then back together towards clear self-advocacy, expression and to build trustful communication. EMDR in the couple context can clear a lot of old trauma and wounded pattern-associations that mire us in destructive relational dynamics.

I enjoy working with clients from many different backgrounds. I have extensive experience working with individuals, couples, and families who are struggling and are looking to invest in their own future and those of their loved ones. I have worked in private practice as well as in a hospital setting and am very comfortable with the wide range of mental illness and relationship issues and welcome any clients struggling with mild mental health or relationship issues up to severe cases in each area. I only ask that clients want to move forward.

Although the adults whom I assist come with a wide range of presenting problems - such as sexual dysfunctions, mental health issues, relationship conflict, and addictions, the underlying problem is that we are all suffering emotionally, longing to feel understood, and to acquire the tools that will relieve our distress.

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
