Being a human being is really hard. Sometimes it can feel like an uphill battle just to cope with day to day life. The decision to seek therapy can be a courageous act that can also feel pretty overwhelming. Yet, a good therapist fit is important, because working with the right person can be both liberating and empowering. With 20+ years of experience, I show up in session with curiosity, a grounded approach, extensive training, and a deep commitment to my clients’ wellbeing. I’m skilled in the use of a variety of cutting edge, evidenced-based therapies, and embodied practices, because I am passionate about doing therapy that works.

Feelings of stress, anxiety and overwhelm can be replaced by the confidence and ease that comes with self-acceptance and more balanced expectations.
Do you worry about what you ‘should’ be doing or feeling? Juggling work and personal commitments can lead you to feel like there’s never enough time to get everything done. Worrying about the future, or looking back on what you could have done better in the past, can feel overwhelming. This cycle of feeling like you’re not living up to your own expectations, or those of other people, can make you feel unsettled, off-balance and like you’re not fully present in your own life.

I am happy to work with an extensive range of clients and organize my practice around providing Client-Centred Therapy grounded in empirically-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Additionally, I have lived experience as a first responder and am passionate about addressing the unique challenges associated with fulfilling such roles. In my experience working with people over the last 10 years, I've found that often their challenges are best addressed first and foremost by being heard; this act of listening is a gift that unlocks the resources hidden within.

We can build on the knowledge and skills you possess to help you cope with all you experience, to find a greater sense of peace and contentment in your life, to work towards acceptance of what you cannot change and to create space for changing the things you have control over in an effort to build the life you want for yourself.
When you’re feeling stressed and unhappy, life feels heavy. Issues like depression, anxiety, stress, grief and loss and low self-esteem can make life difficult and you often wonder, “is this all there is?” Perhaps you’re struggling with PTSD, or you are a First Responder who has seen so much you don’t even know where to begin. You might be struggling with anger, addictions, fertility issues, perfectionism or relationship difficulties. Maybe you even find yourself wondering if it would matter if you were here at all. I am here to say, you’re in the right place, and I am going to help you.

I believe that creating a positive and collaborative client-therapist relationship is fundamental to the healing journey. My philosophy revolves around helping to free clients from unhelpful patterns and ways of thinking in order to fully embrace the meaningful life they want to live. I have walked alongside people struggling with a wide range of mental health and life challenges and I take a particular interest in anxiety and trauma.

Together, we can build a version of you that welcomes self-compassion, forgiveness, acceptance, and healing.
Do you feel you may not be living as the best version of yourself? Do you feel haunted by your past? Struggling to move forward? As humans, we have an innate need to feel seen, heard, validated, and safe. I chose a career that allows me to meet these needs for people like you. Seeking therapy is a step towards self-awareness and healing. The differences between our rational and emotional brain can make us feel disconnected and recognizing our internal dualities can be helpful. Reconnecting with our inner child, processing our grief, and holding space for our emotions can be liberating and empowering, as well as immensely healing.

Do you feel stuck? Disconnected from your needs, wants, or sense of self? Are you ready to create movement in your life? Whether you’re focused on school, work, relationships, self-discovery, or all of the above, you’re trying to “figure it all out” alone, and it has become exhausting and confusing! On top of it all, decision making feels impossible. Since you're disconnected from your needs, you may even feel pressure to live according to expectations of others. Now, you’re left with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, burnout, and living a life that doesn’t feel like it’s truly yours. I know the feeling, and I’m here for you.

Do you consider yourself an independent warrior? Someone who doesn’t need others to help or support them? Are you the person that keeps their emotions and feelings bottled up inside to avoid rocking the boat or upsetting others? The one who shows up for everyone else in their life but struggles to reach out in their time of need? Do you feel frustrated that people seem to take you for granted, and no matter how much you give or do, it never feels like enough? It doesn’t have to be this way. Humans are wired for connection, it is ok to need others!

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Counsellors

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
