I work with a variety of presentations, ranging from anxiety, depression, developmental neglect and trauma, relationship challenges, attachment based issues, and emotional regulation.
In my work with clients, I prize the relationship we share as the vehicle through which treatment and change occurs. Through this relationship, we endeavour for therapy to be a space whereby a collaborative understanding of what has brought them to this point in life may be developed. Indeed, I believe that it is from this place that we may then work to develop a pathway forward to treat what is present, foster and deepen insight, and muster compassion to hold the fullness and uniqueness of each individual with deep appreciation and care.

In over 20 years as a therapist, I have worked with a wide range of clients and couples with many and varied issues. I work in a way that is strongly client, and emotionally focused. I have worked with clients experiencing depression, anxiety, substance issues, food disorders, grief, child-hood trauma, uncertainty around sexuality and gender, around identity and self confidence/esteem. I work well with clients who are looking to change their lives and who are open to exploring their issues; to challenge their thinking and to examine what isn't working for them and to take practical steps to shift beyond where they are now.

I'll help you find a way through whatever is bothering you by teaching you a different way of relating to your problems which will be a total relief. The changes you make will be lasting, life-enhancing and uniquely yours. You may have never had therapy, or be like many of the people I work with and have seen lots of other therapists before and nothing has really stuck. It could be a familiar old depression feeling creeping back in, you might be feeling conflicted about what to do about a situation, whatever it is, I can help. As a psychotherapist, I am unfortunately unable to offer Medicare rebates.

Exploring the ways people uniquely adapt, cope and communicate, I offer therapy for anxiety, depression, PTSD/CPTSD, grief and loss, intimacy, identity, self-esteem, family systems, parenting, life transitions and relational conflicts.
Disconnected. Anxious. Overwhelmed. Struggling. Uninspired. Challenged. Hurting. Numb. Lost. Any of these experiences resonate? Often when people seek therapy there is an internal voice which is speaking a longing for change. Therapy offers a space to become curious about the how and why we may have found ourselves stuck. It offers time to attune to your internal world and make meaning, move with and through complexity, and orient toward new goals. Working with adults and adolescents I practice with a trauma-informed, evidence-based, collaborative and creative focus. I appreciate the complexities of our deeply human states.

Hi, my name is Josh. I specialise in working with clients with trauma (C/PTSD), anxiety, depression and chronic conditions by facilitating Body-Mind Processing practices. I use Buddhist Psychotherapy as my therapeutic framework. Buddhist Psychotherapy is a non-religious, brain science-focused and compassion-oriented framework, which can combine evidence-based counselling methods with body-mind integrative practices for a restored sense of wellbeing. My practice focuses on the body’s innate wisdom to work out solutions to the presented issues, as well as working with emotions as the vehicles to connect body-and-mind.

Depression Counsellors

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
