I offer a non-judgemental, safe space for people with
depression
, anxiety, addiction and trauma. I use a person-centred approach, meaning you are the expert of your own experience and I am here to offer support with things that may be troubling you and feelings that are uncomfortable to sit with. I studied Psychology at RMIT and Psychotherapy at the Cairnmillar Institute. I have been working in this space for 4 years, working as a school counsellor, a helpline counsellor and within private practice. Within that brief time I have seen many people's lives change when counselled with a warm, empathic and compassionate approach.

People come to see me for a lot of different reasons. For instance, you might be experiencing
depression
or anxiety, having relationship difficulties (whether you're single or partnered), going through a major life transition or loss, or wondering about the overall direction of your life. You may have a sense that there's something more to life -- that you could be living a richer life, and thriving more than you are right now. I'm here to support you and examine what's working and not, whether you're seeking a major transformation, or simply a deeper understanding of your life patterns.

A wish to get better, and a willingness to look inside oneself. These are the only essentials for success in therapy. I enjoy helping people with OCD and rumination to regain a sense of agency over their mind, people with
depression
to understand what is happening inside themselves that is causing their suffering and free themselves from it, people with PTSD to feel safe again and gain self-compassion and heal their nervous system, people with difficulty in relationships to understand what is happening and operate more smoothly, and helping people with many other difficulties to heal and move forward.

and chronic conditions by facilitating Body-Mind Processing practices. I use Buddhist Psychotherapy as my therapeutic framework. Buddhist Psychotherapy is a non-religious, brain science-focused and compassion-oriented framework, which can combine evidence-based counselling methods with body-mind integrative practices for a restored sense of wellbeing. My practice focuses on the body’s innate wisdom to work out solutions to the presented issues, as well as working with emotions as the vehicles to connect body-and-mind.

We often come to therapy when we are anticipating or experiencing change; endings and new beginnings. I use a mixture of talk and Art therapy to work with people through changes; in identity, relationships, sexuality, health, career and family; if it's a change you're in, or a change you're wanting or needing. I work with the LGBTQIA+ community and our allies, friends and family. Together we can explore the parts of you that come with endings and change; grief and loss, anger, anxiety and
depression
. In doing this, we can become curious and generate movement towards new-beginnings and new chapters.

Hi, my name's Michele and I offer counselling and psychotherapy to adults who are experiencing emotional distress that prevents them from functioning well in their work and personal lives. You may want to see a psychologist if you are experiencing excessive worry, panicky feelings, low mood, low energy or loss of interest in things. I offer a space for individuals to enhance their understanding of how they relate to the world, themselves, and others. I assist individuals in exploring current, and enduring difficulties they may have that are impacting their ability to live life in a way that they consider to be meaningful. I often meet with individuals who are interested in exploring facets of their lives untouched by previous therapeutic endeavors. I am engaged with existential literature and eastern thought and religion, specifically that of Zen Buddhist practice, in particular their application to therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
