As the child of a Vietnam Veteran with PTSD, I have experienced the long lasting effects of trauma and understand the impact on our heroes and their family members; including First Responders. I started my career as an educator over 25 years ago. I work as a mental health professional and a professional school counselor. I work with a variety of clients with differing ages and cultural and environmental backgrounds. My clients range from ages 12 years old and up. My first priority is meeting the client where they are, mentally and emotionally, and ensuring they feel safe and judgement-free.

Within themselves, each person has the power and strength to tackle the challenges and difficulties they face. It’s my job, as a clinician, to help them access that power and strength, and I do this by first providing a non-judgmental and positive environment. This allows us to identify the thoughts and perceptions that are influencing their actions, both positive and negative. Real, affirming change can happen when we openly examine the thinking that is holding us back and work to change those thoughts that are no longer servicing our goals. I’m excited to help clients with that self-examination and re-building process.

So many people bombard us with cliches like “Life is what you make it” or “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” when the unexpected happens or we lose control of situations and ourselves. Not only does this usually make us feel worse and/or not heard, we usually do not know what those sayings even mean. I’m sure people typically mean well when using these phrases, however, we need practical remedies to the “cards we were dealt” in our personal lives. It’s rare that the average person listens to us, validates us, AND helps us process what’s happening so that we can wholeheartedly move on.
