I have worked on clinical research at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, looking at how medicines including ketamine help address substance use problems.
When the body is wounded, it shows a powerful and innate ability to heal itself. Likewise, the wounded psyche has a natural inclination toward healing if conditions are right. Therapy is the container made of these essential conditions—connection, compassion, presence and, above all, safety. In it, you can access your inner intelligence to bring about growth, transformation, courage, calm, & greater balance. I approach my clients as a partner in this process, believing in your core capacities and strengths as the foundation of healing.

Taking this step is likely a daunting and courageous one for you. I offer a safe, supportive environment, where I will actively listen and help you understand your emotions better so that you can make the changes you may wish to make. I work with people from all walks of life who struggle with anxiety, depression, relational/marital issues, postpartum, parenting and substance use disorders, to name a few. I see individuals and couples in my practice and the way I work is informed by evidence-based treatment approaches (AEDP and EFT) which explore how our earliest experiences in life connect with current experience/relationships.

My background in the arts (PhD in art history), training in DBT, clinical social work, substance use, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and secular mindfulness deepens the work for many.
As a therapist I work collaboratively to further existing strengths and overcome difficulties that cause people to seek help. Changes in relationships and careers, personal losses and new beginnings, help with long-term recovery, and maintaining emotional balance are some of the issues that benefit from psychotherapy. I seek to provide an atmosphere of attentive listening, safe expression of thoughts and feelings, and gentle suggestions to initiate change. I work well with young and mature adults, graduate students, parents, artists and creative professionals, and anyone who seeks to integrate insight with action to generate change.

Psychotherapy is an investment in a life lived consciously and self-reflectively. With respect for the complexity of psychological problems and their uniquely subjective meaning and function for each person, the "work" of psychotherapy fosters a curiosity about ourselves, our histories, our relational patterns, our ways of thinking and behaving, and of managing stress and loss. Questions like - why do I do the things I do? Choose to be involved with this type of person? React to stress or loss this way? Why am I stuck? Sad? Empty feeling? - help us develop insight and the capacity for informed change.

Whether your decision to find a therapist is related to recent or long-standing issues, greater self-awareness and behavioral change can reduce your distress and lead to a more satisfying life. Together, we will identify the goals of treatment and pathways to transform difficulties. Individuals contact me to address a range of issues, including depression, anxiety, self-judgment/shame, substance abuse, relationship problems, poor motivation, job stress, loss, identity issues, trauma, and life transitions. I work collaboratively with clients to identify and enhance inherent strengths, and develop new tools when indicated.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
