I utilize a variety of trauma-informed therapies, including Somatic Experiencing, parts work, psychodynamic, and expressive therapies to support in understanding, processing, and re-writing your story.
We all have a story, and in that story, we get to serve as the author of our own lives. For many reasons, it can be hard to connect to our own inner wisdom, creativity, and power, to recognize that we are our own author. Life is challenging and you may be fighting battles internally and externally against oppressive or unfair systems. But story is the language of the human experience and one that has been used to survive throughout all of time. Through story, we evolve, create, and maintain connection to ourselves and those around us. What would it be like to feel like you have the power to create the story you have always wanted?

Life is full of pivotal moments that can attempt to define our stories and our personhood. Unfortunately, it often feels like our most painful encounters seem to have the greatest impact. This can leave us feeling confused, angry, and grieved. Whether you are dealing with struggles in the present, grappling with trials from your past, or just looking for a safe space to process and grow, you are more than the pain you have endured, and healing. is. possible. If this story feels all too familiar for you, I understand, and I am glad you are here.

I was raised in the Kansas City area, born in the Pacific Northwest. My father, a shrimper who then spent his days on the Bering Sea, moved home to the Midwest to raise his twins around family. He would one day become a social worker and set an example for me that brings us to this very moment in time. I started my education non traditionally at 28 years old studying Psychology and Public Administration at NWMSU. I continued my education at the University of Missouri - Kansas City earning my MA in Social Work.

Kudos to you for considering counseling and researching your options. Whether you are returning to counseling or just getting started, it can be a daunting task, especially since counselors are not "one size fits all." Taking time to find a counselor that you "click with" can take your session from "okay" to meaningful and fulfilling. Many of my clients report feeling "stuck" in their situations and "tired of pretending to be okay". Some experience dark thoughts that they don't understand or know how to talk about, while others are ready for a change but don't know where to start. I often say, "being human is a messy experience."

Do you find yourself repeating the same cycles and behaviors, feeling out of control or victim to your circumstances? Feeling seemingly unable to think, behave, or choose differently? Are you ready to commit and invest in yourself and regain control? These powerful cycles that consume us indicate something important - we as human beings are driven to repeat what we have not resolved. Pervasive and unaddressed emotions are often the culprit of these vicious cycles, demanding to be tended to and released so the system can function more in health.

Being a man is hard enough. Then, trying to open up to someone and work on your struggles while getting in touch with your emotions and feelings. Talk about a challenge. Not to mention the feeling in the back of your mind that a female therapist is judging you. I get the struggle. As men, we have been conditioned and groomed to be a certain way. It's not that we aren't enough or that we are the enemy. We haven't been shown how to address what's going on in our body and mind. My services are for those wanting a nonjudgmental approach while also being held accountable on their path to an evolving self.

Somatic Experiencing and Internal Family Systems therapy are experiential and focused, but gentle, using awareness of what is happening in the body and mind to restore self-regulation, internal balance and presence.
We seek help when our way of relating to ourselves and others is no longer working for us. It can be daunting to look outside of ourselves to gain an understanding of something so personal, but taking this step offers the opportunity to cultivate powerful tools for adaptation, self-regulation and productive relationships. The tools that I use come from Psychodynamic Therapy, Somatic Experiencing and Internal Family Systems Therapy. These therapeutic modalities speak to the mind, body and heart, respectively, offering a holistic path to transformational change.

As a Somatic Experiencing (SE) Practitioner in training, I support SE's creative and more deeply effective ways of treating trauma.
If you're reading this, here are some of the thoughts you might be experiencing: "I am tired of feeling this way," "I know there's something better in life than this," "My body feels completely out of control and caught in an anxious/depressive cycle," "I want to be free of this fear and step into peace and clarity," "I seem to have this chronic pain or body disposition that doesn't make sense and I don't enjoy; it might be connected to something that happened to me..." If one or more of these thoughts just won't go away, it may be time to get some therapeutic support.

I incorporate several mindfulness-based & somatic techniques.
My approach to therapy incorporates deep emotional work with action and goal-oriented steps. I aim to help clients build awareness of their pain points while fostering a mindful and nonjudgmental curiosity about themselves. I have specialized training in working with folks impacted by trauma and experiencing perinatal mental health and adjustment concerns. I believe our past experiences, including intergenerational trauma, can impact the way we show up in the present. My goal is to create a therapeutic space in which clients can work through these experiences to find their authentic selves and build deeper relationships.

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
