My top priority is to create an environment that fosters a healthy therapeutic alliance. This is the most critical component of client success, and my greatest professional joy. I believe that we already have the answers we are seeking. Using the support of another person to explore oneself and find the answers together is an extraordinary part of the human experience. The habits we develop, no matter how maladaptive, were established to protect us. I strive to help individuals honor the coping mechanisms that were created, while simultaneously recognizing when these habits no longer serve us. You have the capacity to heal.

Your once bubbly and talkative teen is now spending all of their time in their room, withdrawing from loved ones and feeling alone with increasing stress. You feel like you haven't been able to connect with them, and wonder what's happening in their lives. You have noticed they are more distant, sad, or angry but aren't sure why, and when you try to help you feel like it makes everything worse. The things that you used to talk about and enjoy together don't interest them anymore. You are starting to feel like you are losing your son or daughter.

Life can be challenging and very difficult to navigate, whether it's concerning a career, school, an illness, relationships, etc., and often times, these life challenges are in co-occurrence with one another. Likewise, we tend to feel as though we are alone in facing life struggles, and I am here to help you understand that you are not alone. My goal is to validate you and your life experiences while guiding you in a way to effectively take on life challenges. Through validation, collaboratively, we can also recognize how your thought and behavioral patterns impact how you emotionally react to difficult life experiences.

People are a lot like plants. We stem from different roots, endure different stressors, and grow under different conditions. Yet, our most important similarity is our ability to be resilient even in the face of adversity. In my clinical approach, I nurture the conditions that support each individual’s growth through collaboration, creativity, and compassion. Whether you are looking to tend to the intricacies of grief and loss, uproot your life from past trauma, cut down on addictive patterns, or simply absorb new tools for managing day-to-day stressors, I would love the opportunity to work with you and help you grow.

I have worked with families experiencing child abuse and neglect, marriage difficulties, depression, anxiety and self-harming behaviors.
I left my career in the finance industry to pursue my passion for healing and health in 2013. I have a warm and caring personality and am experienced working with individuals, couples, families and children. I use a variety of treatment modalities, but my approach is very client-centered. I often utilize a cognitive behavioral approach to counseling, helping clients understand the relationship between their thoughts, feelings and behaviors and learning which they can control.

Reaching out for help takes courage, and I am glad you have considered me in your search for hope and clarity. The daily struggles of life can be overwhelming. You keep thinking that you can figure things out yourself, but you keep running into the same walls every day. Depression, loneliness, anger, and confusion leave you stressed and feeling like the only person with these struggles. You know you argue too much but don’t know how to stop. You know you have bad habits interfering with your life, but no matter how hard you try, you can’t stop them.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
