A fundamental sense of wellbeing is our natural state. Having a sense of fear of what is going to happen next is also a part of our nature. Which experience dominates depends on which parts of our mind and nervous system are in the driver's seat, so to speak. We can use this knowledge to improve our relationships, enjoy our lives more, and feel more optimistic about the future by noticing which parts of our selves are in control and make a shift to access the innate wisdom that we all possess.

Though I work with a multitude of issues, I specialize in anxiety, relationship issues, substance abuse, and helping people find more skillful, kinder ways to relate to themselves.
"Stuck." At some point in our lives, we all feel it. I help people link their desire for things to be different to the places they feel stuck, healthfully and effectively. You don't need to know how to change, we start with where you are. I like the Chinese proverb, "Acceptance and change are brothers, but acceptance is the older brother." By helping you learn to first accept where you are (even if now it seems impossible), suffering is naturally reduced and there is more energy and room for growth. You get to like yourself now AND change.

Common themes that I work with include attachment wounds, traumatic life experiences, self-esteem and identity issues, cultural and societal impacts, difficult life transitions, grief, codependency, narcissistic abuse, Nonviolent communication and assertiveness training, and understanding/improving our relationship with ourselves and our body.
We are not defined by what has happened to us, but what we choose to become in response to it. I see therapy as a very collaborative process; I aim to assist clients in walking their path to healing and wellness while striving to allow them to teach me about who they are and what they may need. My approach to therapy is integrative and humanistic; tailored to the needs and preferences of each individual, and in support of their desired goals. I am currently on sabbatical for the time being but accepting clients to be added to my running waitlist upon my return.

I like to take a comprehensive, collaborative approach to treatment and focus on building a professional and positive relationship versus treating a diagnosis. To me, it is important to build a genuine relationship based on trust, openness and honesty, that emphasizes meeting the client where they’re at. I believe the client is an expert in their own lives and my role is to help them become a healthier, happier version of themselves.

Self doubt sucks. It’s already hard to say no and how can you stand up for yourself when You’re not sure what you want or need? And even when you’re clear, stating your wants or needs is terrifying. It all makes navigating relationships and work or school really stressful. If you can relate, you’re not alone. These things are very common, especially for people who were in a toxic relationship as an adult or as a child. But it’s possible to feel confident, comfortable in who you are and to stand up for yourself . You can feel empowered and more in control of your life. Imagine feeling less anxious and more at ease.

My name is Elizabeth Cowell. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I utilized CBT and EMDR mainly to work with trauma, anxiety, depression, and grief. I also use Gottman and EFT to work with couples. My approach to therapy is influenced by Aaron Beck who founded Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Many people struggle with misconceptions about themselves. These misconceptions are created by the environment. I use CBT to help people change those misconceptions so that they can feel better about themselves and have a more positive outlook on life.

I use a collaborative approach to therapy and your feedback is essential! It is all about the relationship!.
Are you doing well yet know you could be doing better? Do you often feel like you are juggling too many things and don´t have time to breath? If you identify as this person, I am here to help you manage your life! Many people think therapy is only for people who are ¨dysfunctional¨. This is a thing of the past! Everyone can benefit from someone to help them live their best lives while finding inner and outer peace. What would it be like to be able to say ¨no¨ more? To be able to really say ¨yes¨ with enthusiasm and intention? Let me help you get there!

Relationship Issues Therapists
While need for human connection appears to be innate, the ability to form healthy, loving relationships is learned. Some evidence suggests that the ability to form a stable relationship starts to form in infancy, in a child's earliest experiences with a caregiver who reliably meets the infant's needs for food, care, warmth, protection, stimulation, and social contact. Such relationships are not destiny, but they are theorized to establish deeply ingrained patterns of relating to others. The end of a relationship, however, is often a source of great psychological anguish.
