I integrate a relational and systemic perspective with the client's individual inter-subjective experience in order to develop a collaborative and personally meaningful treatment process.
In my practice I work with individuals and couples. I believe that therapy can be a useful tool in learning to understand ourselves better, and in building more rewarding and healthy relationships with others. It is a unique opportunity to focus on what is important to us, and what may be preventing us from living to our full potential. In my practice I like to address emotional, cognitive and relational aspects of individual experience. My approach focuses on both, accomplishment of more pressing short term goals, as well as long term goals and personal growth.

Sexuality is a complex, personal, and social experience. Many of us were raised with secrecy, silence, and shame. This often results in unsatisfactory or unhealthy sexual and emotional relationships. Many people today are struggling with sexuality and sex with their partners. We often don't know how to communicate about our wants, needs, desires, and boundaries. We may feel lonely, isolated, or misunderstood. There may be resentment or hurt in your relationships. Let's work together to heal the wounds and have a healthier, happier sexual life.

I believe you will experience me as genuine, curious, and direct. Together, we will challenge old assumptions and create new ways of approaching problems, relationships, and life in general. The work we do in therapy is serious and it is hard. It's also valuable and rewarding, and in our work, we will likely find ourselves laughing a lot. Here, you will experience acceptance and connection that I believe will make the relationships in your life easier to navigate and more rewarding.

We’re in an age of overwhelm. I help clients develop healthy self-compassion as they balance responsibilities and relationships with the cumulative stress of unresolved traumas and/or the current economic, political, and environmental crises. When we explore patterns in our boundaries, families, and relationships, we can reveal deeper truths and unmet needs, and are empowered to make changes that promote safety and reduce the feeling of being stuck. It is important that you feel heard by a professional who supports you. Third Culture Kids, nomads, fish out of water, and micro-minorities welcome. We will create context.

Many seek therapy because of the challenges they face in their everyday life. Individuals know that something is interfering significantly with their ability to find satisfaction in their life to avoid distress. As a seasoned and highly trained therapist, I provide an empathic environment that enables a shared journey into an individual's personal functioning. A respectful curiosity about problems and challenges develops, generating ways of resolving difficulties in life.

It’s well known that the best and sometimes only way to “better” is through. Finding the strength, motivation, and courage to work through challenges is easier said than done. The very fact that you’re on this page, looking for support, means that you’re moving in the right direction. One of the most important things impacting the success of therapy is the quality of the relationship between a therapist and their client. For this reason, it’s so important that you’re comfortable working closely with your therapist and have confidence that they have the expertise and experience to support you.

What if your best life is just a phone call away? What would you be willing to do??? Don't let guilt, shame, heart aches, or betrayal hold you back any longer. Live long enough and you or someone you know can experience any of these issues. Experiencing any of these circumstances can leave you feeling loss, helpless, hopeless and stuck. Unresolved hurts from our past or present can keep us trapped or disillusioned that life can never get better. My name is Valerie Latney and I would be honored to journey with you into well being.

Life is a journey and on our journey we will experience love, joy, and happiness. We will also encounter pain, loss, suffering and hardship. As a licensed clinical social worker I offer a safe space where you can safely talk about your experiences and feelings. I want to help you trust your own intuition as you talk about your life and make decisions about the direction of it. I am accepting, caring, and supportive. I believe in cultural humility which allows the individual to teach me about their self identity to include their ethnicity, spirituality, sexual identity, and other aspects of their cultural.

Has something always felt off in your life? Perhaps you’ve never made peace with your past, or you feel you’ve settled for too little in the present. Perhaps you are overwhelmed by the challenges of a new pregnancy or new (or old) parenting? You have come to the right place! I can help with the overwhelming feelings of new and old relationships. Feelings of not being good enough, despite what you've accomplished, or everything you do for those around you. I help people discover and accept their authentic self. Sometimes that means learning to better understand and love life as it is, and sometimes that means making changes.

Waitlist for new clients
Let’s face it...sometimes life can feel overwhelming and you might be wondering if therapy can help. Let me tell you a little bit about myself and you can determine if we might be a good match. I work with female adolescents and adults who struggle with anxiety, depression, transitions, parenting issues and trauma. I believe that we each have many strengths within us, even if it doesn’t always feel that way, and that each of us is the expert of our own life and knows what we need to do to cope, heal and feel complete. I also know that sometimes those strengths and solutions can feel elusive and that’s where I can help.

Asking for help demonstrates bravery and is an action step toward a new experience in life. I have been helping individuals recover from addiction for over twenty years. Now, I assist clients to grow and heal from abuse, neglect, traumas and move through rough patches in life. I recognize the importance of this work, but believe curiosity and laughter can be part of the therapeutic process as well as tears, grief and anger. Transformation and change are often possible and I am honored to witness this daily.

My approach to working together is both collaborative & relational.
I became a psychotherapist because my own therapy and therapist was so incredibly impactful. It is the greatest honor and privilege to bear witness to my clients' lives. I have an egalitarian approach; we partner together to give you the support needed to make whatever changes you are seeking in your life.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
