Parenting is hard and children do not come with an instruction manual! Using a relational and strength based approach, I work alongside parents to build their capacity to better understand the needs of their children and how to more effectively parent within a family system. Uncovering the factors that contribute to how and why we parent the way we do is key to discovering new ways to respond to our children.

Do you, or a close family member juggle many roles, such as work, family, children and relationships? As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I understand that some days are overwhelming, and stress can take an emotional toll. Sometimes, life deals us an awful hand with so many wounds and hurts that we have no idea how we'll get through. We feel sad, anxious, overwhelmed, angry, depressed and don't know how to move forward with that emotion. We find ourselves stuck in the same patterns and don't know how to change them. Frequently, our relationships struggle as a result. I believe in becoming whole and healing from these wounds and hurts. I believe each person has innate characteristics that make this healing possible. In therapy, our goal is to remove these constraints that prevent you from accessing your core Self and create a life that feels lighter.

My name is Jewels and I am the owner of Healing River Therapy, LLC. I specialize in a very specific area of care: I support adults who grew up being wounded by their mother. This can take many forms including emotional neglect, lack of nurturing or narcissism to name a few. An insecure attachment can cause anxiety, low self-esteem, trust issues, people pleasing tendencies, self-isolation, guilt and self-doubt. It can create challenges standing up for oneself or difficulty establishing healthy boundaries with others. I have been trained in narcissistic abuse, attachment-based trauma and Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy.

***Accepting new patients*** Brene Brown says, that "daring greatly is being brave and afraid every minute of the day at the exact same time". Deciding to participate in therapy is one of the most brave and scary decisions a person can make, but it is also one of the most rewarding. I congratulate you on taking the step to see change happen, and it would be an honor to walk with you through this journey! Using a strengths based perspective, together we will work to address the various barriers and life circumstances that are getting in the way of living your best life.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Registered Dance/Movement Therapist. I specialize in trauma-informed care for children (especially ages birth-6 years old) and adults. My background includes working with children and adults who have experienced various forms of trauma, such as abuse, neglect, loss, and disrupted attachments, as well as supporting children on the autism spectrum. Our outward behaviors and physical manifestations are representative of what we are feeling and thinking. In order to understand the whole person and effect change, I believe it is important to address the underlying reasons for behaviors.

I know you’re tired. It’s exhausting carrying around that tightness in your chest and sinking feeling in your stomach. You want nothing more than to just hit a pause button on the thoughts whirling and looping around and around in your head. You’re consumed with negative thoughts about yourself, your work or school performance, your body, and constantly comparing yourself to others in the world. You’re overwhelmed with all the pressure and unfair expectations society places on you. The world feels like it’s constantly on fire and you feel helpless or hopeless. You don’t know how to be ok with so much uncertainty in your life.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
