As a seasoned licensed psychologist focusing on relationship issues, I work online with couples, individuals and families of adult children who want to improve their intimate relationships at home as well as their relational skills at work. I believe therapy is most effective when it provides both a safe space for reflection as well as a challenge. Additionally, I think good therapy calls for collaboration, sensitivity, honesty, and most of all having your best interests at heart.

I utilize a relational and systems approach to see you in the larger context of your life, and adopt a psychodynamic framework to understand how this has influenced your development.
Too often, we lack a safe space to be our authentic selves. It might be that we identify differently from how we are perceived. Or that we have been marginalized in a place we call home. Or that we find ourselves in a career that doesn’t fit who we are or what we want in life. In today’s society, we are constantly weighed down by external demands: our society’s prejudices, our parents’ hopes for our futures, our partners’ desires, our managers’ requests, and the list goes on. With so many expectations, it can be difficult to tune out the noise and listen to our internal voices.

There isn't one formula that works for everyone, and so I have been trained in a range of modalities including: relational psychodynamic therapy, expressive arts therapy, mindfulness, DBT, transpersonal psychology, and family systems.
Most of us lug around a suitcase full of our thoughts, feelings, family history and past experiences and have no idea what's in there. Our current responses to and experience of life come from the contents of that suitcase. Together in therapy we gently unpack it. We will see what is working for you, what needs more support and what has served it's purpose but no longer works. I work collaboratively and am curious about all the things that make you who you are. I am particularly interested in working with people who feel misunderstood or unimportant.

We may face a point in life when our foundation is jolted and we begin to question the path we are on. We can be faced with circumstances that affect areas of our life and result in feeling confused or stuck on how to move forward. We may experience a sense of imbalance in our work, relationships, self-care, or spirituality. As we try to regain our footing and work towards resolving these afflictions, we may struggle with decision-making and managing the overwhelming feelings that may arise. In these moments of uncertainty, therapy can bring clarity and hope and remind us of our existing strengths and potential to persevere.

Our life experiences can lead us to question our identity and purpose in the world we live in. This can lead us to anxiety, depression, and trauma. Do you want to improve how you face challenges, function in your relationships, and face overwhelming feelings? I place heavy importance on addressing trauma. Trauma disintegrates the parts that make up your whole self, which can leave aspects of who you are hidden from your awareness. Left unaddressed, anxiety and depression can worsen, which can rob you of the necessary connection that all human beings need to thrive. I aim to help you process unresolved trauma.

When we feel overwhelmed by feelings of sadness or our inability to cope with everyday life problems, often our interpersonal relationships suffer, or we may face difficulty in concentrating on work or studies. We either end up internalizing our frustration and become withdrawn, irritable, anxious, or addicted. Or we may externalize and become aggressive or abusive, etc. Further, sometimes there are certain unresolved/unidentified issues that may have been silently creating conflicts in our lives, and as a result, may have been holding us back from performing at our best.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
