I have previously worked with adolescents and adults experiencing difficulties of daily living, such as anxiety, depression, relationship problems, as well as survivors of trauma and persons experiencing psychosis.
"I have commanded foreign words to explicate the native in me, all the while obfuscating what was, but was not, could not be, spoken. And what of words? I have spoken in multitudes and platitudes. I have harbored thoughts and feelings with no hope of setting them off to sail in these words. All words but my own. There are, and always will be, two ways to tell my stories. I shall strive to choose dis-cordingly. There once was word where my innards stood. First there was word. After word there was silence. ..."

Since then, I have worked with adolescents through adults struggling with substance abuse, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and Schizophrenia.
If you're reading this, I want to congratulate you on taking the first step towards improving your mental health. Knowing you are in a place where you need to ask for help can be a scary feeling, and I want to commend you for starting this journey towards bettering yourself. Life can bring many unexpected challenges. I believe with the correct tools and mindset, it is possible for a person to overcome anything that comes in their path, no matter how difficult the obstacle may seem.

People often come to psychotherapy after long-term frustrations, when they feel overwhelmed by a lack of possibility, in times of emotional pain, and when in a crisis. These feelings are addressed through a psychotherapeutic process in which people articulate aspects of experience they would not otherwise have a chance to explore. Through this process they not only make sense of symptoms and other forms of relational suffering, but foster increased freedom, creativity, and purpose.

I am most helpful to those that want to learn practical skills to help reduce mental health symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and stress, or who find themselves "stuck" and wanting to find more meaning in their lives. While having a safe space to discuss day to day problems and vent is extremely important, many people need a bit more guidance in learning new ways to relate to their thoughts and feelings in order to reach their goals. I aim to provide this guidance in a flexible and collaborative manner, monitoring progress and incorporating feedback throughout treatment.

I am a clinical psychologist with experience in providing short to medium-term treatment that is specific and goal oriented. Early in our work together we will strive to identify specific things you want to change in your life, so we can evaluate along the way whether our strategies are working or need to be tweaked. I also believe it is important to remain flexible and allow space in therapy for exploration, as we might not be fully aware of how certain things affect our lives at the beginning of therapy. You can learn more about me and my practice at www.pacsnyc.com.

Given the complexities and demands of society today, it is inevitable that at some point in all of our lives, we will experience an emotional or challenging event. My view of therapy is that I am here to help you. Together we will explore your situation and utilize the strengths within you, at your own pace, to overcome the challenges the world presents to you.

I am currently seeing clients virtually in New York, Florida and California. Don't Stay Stuck in the Yuck! Counseling and Change can feel scary and overwhelming while staying "stuck" where you are can be even more difficult. It takes time to build trust with a therapist, this can be even more difficult if you have been mandated to treatment or had a bad fit with a therapist in the past. I understand this and want you to feel comfortable and empowered in therapy. No matter what you have experienced in your past or what brings you to treatment, you can THRIVE!

As a therapist I value self-inquiry, relationships, and finding meaning. My primary goal is to create an environment where clients feel accepted and heard, while simultaneously challenged to find new perspectives. At the core of my practice is a nonjudgemental attitude and a desire to bring awareness into my client's lives. We will work together with the goal of exploring different aspects of your self in order to uncover why you may be feeling stuck or unsatisfied.

I strive to understand each individual's issues and needs through the different phases of the therapeutic relationship. I find patterns of thinking which surface from recurrent automatic thoughts. I thus obtain a comprehensive understanding of the person in his/her functioning. Through a pro-active, attuned, caring, neutral, compassionate and non-judgmental stance, an empowering process is developed, leading to an enhancement of self-esteem. I have come to see how people can better understand themselves and their relationships, and am able to to help them make improved choices for themselves, and to live more meaningful lives.

My focus is on healing the root cause of mental health struggles, prioritizing resolution over coping strategies and compensatory mechanisms. As a first step, I usually help my clients feel safe, understand how their life experiences affected them, and where their mental health struggles are coming from. In the following process, we may focus on fostering a secure connection (attachment) with oneself, discovering parts of the client's psyche that may be holding anxiety, pain, anger, or sadness, or other difficult emotions and guiding those parts towards intentional healing.

People often seek therapy at a point where life feels too stressful or off-kilter. This point might emerge gradually or occur in the face of acute problems, stressors or losses that feel overwhelming. Effective therapy requires commitment and engagement on both the part of the therapist and patient and often involves exploring parts of oneself and one’s life that feel elusive or painful. The pursuit of change and growth can take time, however there is a remarkable payoff to effective treatment, which can include greater freedom and satisfaction in the areas of love and intimacy, family and relationships, creativity and work.

Psychosis Therapists

What’s the most effective treatment for psychosis?

The most effective treatment for psychosis is coordinated specialty care. In this model, a team of professionals works with a patient to address all aspects of the underlying disorder. This approach incorporates individual or group therapy, employment and education support, family support and education, medication management (which often involves low doses of antipsychotics), and case management to facilitate problem-solving as needed.

When should people seek treatment for psychosis?

People should seek immediate treatment at the earliest indication of psychosis. Symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized or blocked speech, and agitated body movements. Early signs that a person may be developing a disorder that will lead to psychosis include suspiciousness of others, memory problems and distractibility, an inability to think clearly, rapid or nonsensical speech, withdrawal from friends or family, aggression toward others, and sensitivity to bright lights or noises.

What if psychosis is left untreated?

Without treatment, psychosis can have significant repercussions, including injuries, job loss, homelessness, financial or legal trouble, ruptured relationships, and suffering for the person and their family. While early treatment for psychosis often yields the best results, there is no point past which it becomes useless to seek treatment. At any point, treatment can make a difference.

How do I get someone else to seek treatment for psychosis?

It’s extremely difficult to watch a loved one suffer from hallucinations, delusions, and other elements of psychosis—sometimes exacerbated by their fears of treatment. Have a conversation with them in a quiet space and maintain a calm, supportive tone. Share your concerns about behaviors you’ve observed, suggest treatment, and explain the potential benefits. Listen carefully to their responses. The person may not be ready after one conversation, but with time, they may come around.
