I have received intensive training child-centered play therapy, person-centered therapy, and perinatal mental health, and specialize in supporting women's issues and people who have experienced trauma.
Hello, my name is Jami! I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate, supervised by Jaclyn Sepp, LPC-S, RPT-S, NCC, RYT200. I specialize in working with children, teens, young adults, women and mothers, and am well suited to support HSP's, professional helpers and educators. l believe emphatically that a safe, nurturing relationship is the heart of the therapeutic process; in my practice, I utilize sand tray, expressive arts, mindfulness, play therapy and talk therapy to uncover layers and help people live authentically as themselves, while also fostering coping skills for the obstacles life can throw their way.

We often hear, “Tell your parents how you feel” or “Cut off your family; they’re toxic”? For many second-generation Mexican Americans, these suggestions can feel overwhelming, especially when family dynamics are complicated. Communicating boundaries can be especially challenging in a cultural context where family ties run deep. How do you even tell your Hispanic parents what boundaries are? Let’s work together to figure out how you can fill your own cup before filling everyone else’s. The goal is not to cut them off, but to learn how to interact with them without having to sacrifice your own emotional needs. I’m here to help!

Things aren't working inside of you. You may have put together a fairly decent life but on the inside, you aren't enjoying it. You may be more and more uncomfortable in your body. You know the "right" things to do but they don't seem to get to the heart of the problem. You may even have tried therapy before without it truly helping. It may not have gone deep enough. You are probably experiencing early developmental trauma that was never properly addressed. Early developmental trauma patterns have a way of resurfacing in times of crisis and change.

We all encounter major stress and loss and often we recover well on our own. Sometimes life becomes overwhelming, confusing and too big to process alone. You can reach out for support, and you don’t have to do it alone. Through therapy, you have the power to focus on what helps you learn and grow. I am passionate about helping clients connect to their core values in therapy. We'll use mindfulness-based therapies to help you become aware of thoughts and behaviors that prevent you from experiencing a joyful and authentic life. I enjoy using humor, creativity and self-compassion in my practice.

One of the deepest forms of suffering we create for ourselves is believing, “Something is wrong with me.” Chronic self-judgment, depression, anxiety, and shame can make it challenging to live with balance and purpose. Suffering is often worsened by isolation and disconnection from our emotional pain. Feelings of inadequacy make it difficult to be at home in our own body, heart, and mind, and keep us from living and loving life fully. Often, the first step toward healing is a trusting, respectful, non-judgmental, and caring therapy relationship.

How do you choose from all these profiles? So many warm, smiling capable therapists ready to help. The more you read, the harder it gets, right? We face the same challenge with dating apps, big purchases, and life decisions. The pursuit of perfection can block us from recognizing what's good enough, leaving us feeling stuck, disconnected, and overwhelmed. Therapy can help increase awareness of these patterns and counter them with contentment and acceptance, guiding you toward a more fulfilling and joyful life.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) with an MA in Professional Counseling from Texas State University. I hold certifications as National Board Certified Counselor and a Certified School Counselor. I work with individuals, couples, and families. Working in public education - 10 years as a teacher, and 9+ years as a school counselor - I have had opportunities to foster growth not only among my student-clients, but their families, as well. Childhood experiences define who we are and how we respond to challenges as adults, so it is important for me to connect with the whole person.

I have the belief that people have the ability within themselves to recognize maladaptive patterns in their lives and with a little help, become able to set attainable goals to change those patterns into something more functional for their lives. I believe that motivation to change is a key component in what makes counseling successful for most people. My goal is to provide a safe, welcoming environment for you to help you meet your goals. My hope is that you will be better able to cope with the underlying issues giving you trouble and to help you learn more about yourself and your behavior.

Sometimes we all need extra support or a safe place to turn when life seems overwhelming or confusing. Therapy can offer that support and provide a place to talk about things that may be difficult to share with anyone else. Whether you are struggling with life changes, feelings of sadness and anxiety, a sense of "stuckness", or ready to heal past traumas, therapy can and does provide relief and a new way of living.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
