I assist clients in identifying the tools they have learned throughout their lifetime and help them to make goal oriented changes through a mixture of cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy and person-centered approaches.
I am a pre-licensed Master's level therapist. Starting your therapeutic journey can be both overwhelming and exciting. As an individual, it may be scary to open up, challenge yourself, and commit to change. As a parent, it can be hard to know when the right time is to begin therapy for your child. One thing I know to be true is that each and every person is unique, and is capable of growth, happiness and emotional wellness. I enjoy working with clients from late childhood through adulthood and love helping clients who are new to therapy understand the therapeutic process, create goals, and empower themselves to live their best life.

We all grow up and live in a society which favors conformity. Not "fitting in" or being "different" can result in feelings of depression, low self-esteem, and isolation which can effect all aspects of our lives. This can be especially true for the LGBTQ population. As a psychodynamic therapist, my goal is to assist you in your personal development from unsatisfying or painful patterns of living and to a life that you can celebrate. While we can't change the past, we can work together to change how it continues to impact your life and resolve challenges and issues that have resulted from it.

I am person-centered and utilize skills from DBT, CBT, and solution-focused therapy.
If you are a teen or young adult who is struggling (or an advocate for one), know that I have spent my career working with young people, and -for real-, I get it. Being a teen (or adult, honestly) is hard! My goal is to be compassionate and authentic (zero judgment zone), meet you where you are, and help you to sort out your experiences, make meaning of them, and build your best life. I especially enjoy connecting with those who are neurodiverse or who have experienced hard stuff. I'm a pretty big nerd/geek, and I am fluent in "gamer," & I am comfortable with modifying to create an environment that works for you.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Therapists

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
