Hi, I'm Jay Otterstrom of Otterstrom Counseling & Consulting. As a therapist with over 20 years of experience, I have developed an integrative approach to counseling that enhances the skills, resilience, capacity, and strength of the people I work with. I believe that everyone can recover, heal, grow, develop and reach a higher state of emotional and mental well-being. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), I deeply desire to help people overcome obstacles and reach their health goals.

Our approach to therapy is grounded in the belief and understanding that the ability to heal and grow is inherent within every human being, and that every human has within them the strengths and wisdom needed to do so. We work with people to help make sense of what causes, triggers, and perpetuates unwanted behaviors with individualized strategies to help you understand and intervene in these cyclical patterns. Our approach entails treating you as a whole, with an emphasis on utilizing mindfulness-based treatments including EMDR, somatic therapies, and Art Therapy.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who provides client-centered therapy for adult clients. I have experience with a range of challenges including trauma, mood, anxiety, relationships, LGBTQ, life transitions, social justice, and addictions. After earning a Bachelors degree in Psychology and Sociology from University of Oregon I pursued a Masters of Social Work from Portland State University and graduated with honors. Immediately following graduation I pursued my licensure and have been practicing in Bend since 2010.

Sometimes the patterns that were helpful to get through our childhood present major challenges later in life. Our symptoms do not make us abnormal and are not part of a fundamental flaw that needs fixing, they are a normal response to extraordinary circumstances. Problems do not exist within one person but are the result of a person’s context, family patterns, and learned behaviors.

Since I started my work as a therapist, I have been helping my clients heal from trauma, sexual addiction, and the life impacts of other problematic sexual behaviors and choices they have made that led them to feel shame, anxiety and depression. Through my training and experience working with clients I have become aware that the ways we as a society often respond to people who have suffered traumatic experiences are not always supportive to the recovery process.
