My name is Carlo and I am a licensed clinical social worker. My therapeutic approach is to actively listen to gain an understanding of you as a whole person. This is done with the goal of attaining an awareness not only of the issues you face but the strengths you possess which can be tapped into to help enact a collaboratively-developed and individualized plan of action that facilitates reaching your short and long term mental health and personal goals. Depending on the needs and goals of the client, I typically use interventions based in Cognitive-Behavioral, Mindfulness, Psychodynamic and Solution Focused therapies.

I utilize a psychodynamic approach, which integrates various treatment modalities including Insight Oriented Talk Therapy, CBT, Mindfulness, and IFS.
I am a licensed clinical psychotherapist who earned my Master’s Degree in Social Work from New York University. After completing my Master’s, I went on to attend a four year post-graduate program at The National Institute of the Psychotherapies, where I was certified in psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy. I believe that with the right psychotherapy, one can face any life challenge head on and develop the insight and the skills to grow from them. I have an empathic approach that allows the space for my patients to look within and do the necessary work to improve their lives.

My somatic psychodynamic approach draws on trauma-informed practices, mindfulness, family systems and attachment theory.
I view therapy as a collaborative process and the bond of trust we create is our most powerful tool for healing. I work to create safety to explore challenges together with curiosity and discover creative ways to improve your life. I’m guided by a desire to help you be your most emotionally authentic self, and the healing power of a supportive therapeutic relationship for conducting sustained personal inquiry. I help individuals, families, couples, and adolescents work on communication, relationship issues and repetitive patterns in thinking and behavior.

In addition to psychodynamic therapy techniques I am trained in EMDR and Somatic Experiencing.
People engage in therapy because they are seeking relief from uncomfortable feelings that may have arisen from being overwhelmed with what life has handed them. Many are grappling with relationship challenges, feelings of being stuck, self-defeating behaviors, anxieties, phobias and issues of self-esteem. Others are experiencing physical symptoms which have been diagnosed as being rooted in psychological turmoil, also known as psychophysiologic disorders, or TMS.

I draw primarily from Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Psychodynamic therapy, Mindfulness, and Internal Family Systems (IFS).
Therapy is a collaborative process that hinges on a relationship of trust and understanding. I offer my clients a warm, supportive and non-judgmental space where together we can explore and resolve whatever challenges you may be experiencing. Many of us have developed adaptations to our environments which may result in patterns and behaviors that no longer serve us. The work of therapy is to examine these adaptions with compassion and explore opportunities for growth and change.

Times of crisis are not only occasions that require mindful problem-solving, but can also be opportunities for personal growth. Psychotherapy should provide a calm and supportive setting to reduce anxiety and stress, increase a sense of confidence and competence, and promote the establishment of more satisfying connections to others. My training encompasses psychodynamic, experiential, cognitive-behavioral, and family systems therapy. I work actively and collaboratively with individuals (from 8 to 85), couples, and families. I also provide neuropsychological evaluations for children and adults experiencing difficulties in personal, academic, or occupational functioning.

As a Clinical Psychologist who has traveled extensively and been in practice for over 25 years, I blend Western, Eastern, and Hawaiian approaches to self experience, using principles and/or techniques of Somatic Experiencing (SEP Certificate), EMDR (EMDRIA-Certified Practitioner), Psychodynamic Therapy, Imagery, Ego State Therapy, and LifeForceYoga (Level 1).
I believe we all have an innate orientation toward health, growth, and the expression of our full potential. We may experience, however, blocks in the form of thinking, feeling, and/or bodily symptoms that cause significant distress, interfering with our ability to function optimally and to access our resources and our more complete selves. This may manifest itself in the form of overwhelming feelings such as depression, anxiety, and/or rage; disordered eating and body image; flashbacks and/or other symptoms of unprocessed traumatic experiences; or other signs that we have lost touch with the fullness of who we are.

I employ a psychodynamic and humanistic approach to assist clients in this understanding and process.
Hello and welcome. It is easy to become upset when we experience hardships and lack a safe and supportive environment in which to work through them. Nor does it help when, owing to circumstances beyond our control, we find it difficult to be ourselves and lose touch with what makes us "us." What has been found helpful in such circumstances is a trusting and respectful relationship with a therapist. Such a relationship, and the insight it promotes, can facilitate growth, empowerment, and positive change.

I provide long-term psychodynamic therapy to adults and couples. I focus on exploring interpersonal and trauma-based patterns, and how they shape personality, emotions, and everyday functioning. I also use mindfulness, problem solving, and other strategies if your needs call for them. Meeting more than once per week can facilitate this work but I am open to your preference. I seek to create an open, engaged, comfortable, and constantly evolving therapeutic relationship that motivates you to work through your struggles. I individualize my approach to your unique needs and continually adapt as therapy proceeds.

I draw from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), psychodynamic, person-centered, and play therapy techniques.
Teens are experiencing anxiety and depression at an increased rate. The pressures of school, friendships, and social media are overwhelming. You are noticing that your teen is irritable, withdrawn, expressing excessive worry or sadness, and having difficulty managing their emotions. Communication between you and your teen is tense or non-existent. My goal in therapy is to help your teen identify their emotions and develop coping strategies to improve their emotional-well being. I work to quickly build rapport with your teen so that they feel comfortable to speak about their problems and feelings.

As a systemic thinker, I am always looking at a person in relationship to their environment, and the people in it. With a strength-based approach in family therapy, I also use psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral principles, while providing a safe and empathic environment for our work together. I have treated families, couples and individuals for 16 years with a broad scope of culture, age and relational issues. I have helped many people through transitional events that affect them throughout their lives; school, career, marriage, parenting, illness, loss, divorce and retirement. My interest is in the relationship you have with yourself and those around you.

While psychodynamic theory informs my thinking, I work through different modalities, depending on the individual and circumstances.
I have found that providing a warm and nurturing environment has helped my clients explore areas of their lives that they were previously unwilling to look at. The therapeutic relationship that develops between us, can lead to both introspection and healing. I am a licensed psychologist specializing predominantly in the well being of women across a range of issues including eating disorders, relationship struggles, infertility, anxiety, and post-partum depression. I am also interested in helping people through life transitions, such as entering a new relationship or becoming single again, beginning college, entering the "real world", and becoming a mother.

My orientation blends psychodynamic, relational, cognitive behavioral, mind-body, trauma informed and mindfulness approaches to help people understand, accept, change and heal.
Life can sometimes feel and be very complicated. As a psychotherapist in private practice for 25 years, I work with adults, adolescents, families and couples. The way I approach working with people is to create a compassionate, intelligent, non-judgemental, therapeutic space where a person can feel safe, heard and understood. A person can then be more at ease with talking about their concerns and problems in an authentic and meaningful way. I welcome people from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities and family structures.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
