Therapy is an opportunity to promote healing and personal growth in a supportive and judgement free zone. I have worked in the mental health field as a social worker since 2014. I take a relational approach to counseling as trust and connection are very important to the therapeutic relationship. I work with each client to be trauma-informed and culturally sensitive. I am a trained therapist in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) treatment and Flash technique. I enjoy working to build awareness with how our bodies respond under stress and practicing mindfulness techniques.

Hey, I'm Laurie and I've always been drawn to other humans who march to the beat of their own drum and approach support through a trauma-informed, neurodivergent, gender-affirming, and culturally sensitive lens.
You're out of spoons by 9 am, if you had any at all today. You're constantly vacillating between feeling overloaded and shut down. Your world is too much, and your comfort zone has become your prison; months or years pass before you feel confident enough to take any kind of risk at all. Maybe your pets have become your sole source of social interaction, or you live a rich virtual life and daydream about belonging to an actual in person community who accepts you for exactly who you are (whoever that is!). You want to be the curious master of your own universe, and your fear of change has you tethered to a 10-mile radius.

I am a trauma-informed, culturally sensitive therapist.
We all share human experience of facing challenges, seeking understanding, and desiring emotional well-being. I've lived with the challenges of navigating life between two cultures, enduring the complexities and confusion that often accompany such a unique upbringing. My lived experience ignited me to develop a skill set to effectively support other women, mothers and children of immigrants living in the diaspora. As a MENA therapist, I understand this step can be daunting. I hope you take comfort in me being here to support you on your journey and guide you towards discovering the inherent healing power within yourself.

Accepting new clients. So often, we wear masks for the benefit of those around us while inside, we suffer. I want to normalize that even though you've been through a lot, there's hope that things can improve. If you want a therapist who takes a non-judgmental stand to support you and guide you through your problems, let me help you. I identify with a culturally sensitive approach because vulnerability is difficult for anyone, and having someone who understands you can help.

When we experience loss, stressors, or trauma, it’s common to feel out of control, lost, and disconnected; anxiety, depression, attachment issues, and burnout are often part of the overwhelm and stress that have become today's norm. Along with everything we're going through now, many of us have had events in our past that impact how we act, feel, and respond to loved ones, to work, and especially to ourselves. As we work to help you identify and heal from these experiences, we can take the steps together to help discover You and the path you're meant to grow on, to find lasting change that you dream of and need.

Maybe you are a time in your life in which you are questioning all that you held to be true. Maybe you are feeling lonely, or are wanting more access to that small voice inside you that knows the way to go, but often gets ignored. Whatever brings you here, it takes courage to take the first step and begin. I believe that much of our sorrow and struggles are rooted in relational harm in our past, and that similarly, there is healing to be found in not remaining alone in your experience and process of past and present pain. I would be honored to join you as you step more fully into the stories that have shaped who you are.

Everyone who comes to therapy has a reason and a story. I would be honored to listen to your story and guide you down the best path to feel whole again. I believe that the best therapeutic outcomes develop out of a trusting relationship with your therapist and I attempt to connect on that level in every intervention. I have worked in the mental health field in some form for 22 years and counting.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
