I treat eating disorders and obesity by implementing concrete health coaching strategies, as well as identifying underlying issues that may be in play.
Are you feeling tired physically and emotionally? Stress, depression and anxiety all take a great toll on our psyche and bodies. I can help you create that peace and good health we all want. I also see couples who want to create a better relationship and those needing help to decrease depression/anxiety. I want to help you feel relief as quickly as possible by providing clear, practical steps to move forward in your life.

I don't believe that the ideal client exists. Therapy is for everyone. I practice from a Health at Every Size (HAES) perspective, and would love to work with larger-bodied clients on building and growing self-compassion, and self-esteem, working toward an attitude of fat liberation, and reinforcing the knowledge that all bodies are deserving of love and respect.

I believe that you can experience healing and growth. I believe that everyone has experienced setbacks, hardships, and traumas in life that make it harder to love well and fulfill your personal goals. I believe that healthy, honest, vulnerable relationships are foundational to growth and healing. I believe that it is ultimately up to you to decide how to move forward and choose the path towards improvement. I believe that through honest evaluation and the hard work of taking ownership of your life along with improved relationships you can become empowered to address those issues and become who you are meant to be.

In my therapeutic practice I seek to motivate clients to build the brain they want rather than feeling stuck with the one they have. By harnessing the power of cognitive restructuring, we can excel at tackling complex issues like dealing with stress, managing emotions, changing habits, controlling impulses and navigating complicated relationships in the same way that we would get better at any other skill; through dedication and practice! I use Dialectical Behavior Therapy techniques and skills to help clients set and achieve their own therapeutic goals and try to instil a sense of hopefulness and resolve in every session.

In-Network with Aetna and Premera -- Accepting New Clients! Evening appointments available. I work with children, adolescents, adults and couples. In my counseling work, my starting point is a strength-based, client-focused approach to understand you as an individual, as well as the strengths you have to positively change your situation. (I know we don't always feel these strengths. I think we typically are more hurt than we show, and we are also not as broken as we feel.) My focus has been to sit and listen with an open mind so I can best learn about you and your life.

Life can be isolating at times. This is especially true when you add in ADHD, PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, chronic illness, and Queerness, cultural, and relationship issues. We hold so many identities and struggles that influence who we are and how we move through our place in the world. It is essential to find yourself among those identities and move into the whole version of yourself that finds comfort in the here and now. This includes finding your community and support through all that life throws at us.

Hi! I'm Val :) Having been born in Lima, Peru, and having a background working with people from 2 to 90 years old in various jobs over the last 10 years in the field, I deeply value diverse cultures, perspectives, and experiences. I firmly believe we all have the power to change our entire lives and that we all hold the answers to our problems inside of us. Sometimes, it just takes another brain or space to help us honestly look within ourselves and and see where/what may need a little more healing and then work on those things—one problem, one day, one moment, and one step at a time.

Obesity Therapists

Can obesity be a cause of depression and anxiety?

Yes. It can be stressful and debilitating to carry excess weight. Many people make inaccurate assumptions about people who are overweight. This stigma may lead individuals to feel badly about themselves, decreasing their self-esteem, or leading to feelings of worthlessness. An association between obesity and depression is well-established.

When should an individual seek treatment for obesity?

When obesity, or the feelings it causes, creates a disruption in your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Examples include avoiding social situations due to anxiety, an inability to participate in family life as a result of health problems, or poor performance at work due to low self-esteem or other concerns.

Are there specific medications for weight loss?

There are several prescription drugs that can help with weight loss, including semaglutide and phentermine. These drugs reduce appetite and must be prescribed by a physician. Professionals will suggest lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise, before turning to drugs, which have side effects and typically are prescribed only for a short duration. Many people regain weight after taking weight loss drugs if they have not made significant lifestyle changes.

What is body positivity?

Body positivity is a cultural movement that promotes the acceptance of bodies of all sizes and types, rather than those that conform to societal ideals of beauty. It places self-worth, self-acceptance, and an appreciation for one’s body as goals to achieve a happier, healthier attitude about oneself and others, focusing on who a person is rather than what they look like.
