I am particularly passionate about working with those going through challenging life transitions, LGBTQ concerns, and men's issues.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of young adults and young professionals. I love working with others to find or create their own meaning and identity. Often this requires working on the issues that get in the way, like anxiety, depression, grief, or stress. Whether through a desire to change circumstances, improve self-compassion, or develop better relationships with important people, forming or changing your sense of self will be one of the most important experiences of your life.

Dealing with ADHD, binge eating, LGBTQ+ issues, and relationship struggles can all have one thing in common: feeling disconnected from our wants and needs. With ADHD we can feel like we can't focus, get things done, or commit to our projects. Binge eating only brings short-lived comfort before the guilt and shame to follow. Being queer can result in struggles with self-esteem, and of course, relationship troubles as well. Sometimes we wish we could have some consistency in our lives we can count on. Therapy can help immensely, and can be the answer to helping you make meaningful growth over the long-term.

Feeling overwhelmed? Flooded with painful emotion? Out of touch with yourself? When we don't have the relational support to help us during times of distress, we tend to find other ways to cope with our suffering or to disconnect altogether. Although these coping strategies may have kept us alive and functioning in the past, they may not be serving our best interests. Therapy can be a place to learn more adaptive ways of coping and to use even difficult experiences to grow as a person. As a psychologist, I use research-proven techniques to help people who are in the midst of crises as well as people who feel broken and unhelpable.

Therapy can feel broad and overwhelming. To simplify our approach, we'll seek acceptance and control of adversities that seem to dictate your life. Whatever stressors weigh on you, we'll troubleshoot what hasn't been working and process new tools to put in place. It is my responsibility to adapt to your preferences and ways of learning. I'll provide a space for you that can range from open discussion and exploration, to structured activities and weekly goals. Additionally, these steps are flexible and can be done in a matter of time that fits what you hope to achieve. All possible with individual, couples, and/or family therapy.

I have experience working with older adults, and I have been published as an author in the Journal of Homosexuality for my contributions to a project on the experiences of LGBT elders.
All appointments are currently offered online only via Skype or Zoom. I use an integrative approach to treatment including psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, person-centered, existential, and multicultural approaches to help adults and older adults with a variety of issues including anxiety and depression. I also have clinical knowledge of abnormal psychology, mood disturbances, and self harming behavior. I take a strength based approach to the work, and I work with patients for short-term therapy and for longer-term therapy. I focus on unconscious factors to help patients increase self-awareness and insight.

Our minds are incredible tools for experiencing life- and yet , the mind can so easily slip into anxiety and overthinking. Our memories can bring us joy and a sense of identity, but we can also get "stuck" in past patterns & hurts. Therapy is a unique type of relationship focused on your empowerment and growth. We'll work together to create awareness around those mental, emotional, and behavioral patterns. From here, we'll seek ways to implement positive, conscious changes, based on your personal values and desires.

I am a psychoanalytic and existential psychologist. I am best suited to working with people who are motivated to question themselves, highly open to exploration, and willing to tolerate ambiguity and forego ready-made advice. If you feel ready to do the "deep" work that you may have avoided in therapy before, we may be a good match. Please see my website at www.michaelmillerphd.com for more information.

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
