Counseling works best when the focus is on getting back to yourself. It is a space to seek guidance, introspection, and wellness all geared around your own unique strengths, interests, and needs. Counseling is not about "fixing" you, it's about exploring and connecting with your own capabilities to bring you the wellness you deserve.

Whether you want to work on self-development, trauma recovery, anxiety, depression, relationship problems, or any other variety of issues — my approach is about ensuring the therapy relationship is one in which you feel safe, seen, and heard and that we are working together towards your growth and well-being. I see it as my role to join you on your path to embodying your true self and living a fuller life – whether that means providing support, helping to face the painful spots, asking the tough questions with kindness and curiosity, or offering a new perspective or skill, and always deeply listening with empathy and attunement.

Therapy can create a safe and supportive space to rebuild resiliency and a sense of balance during these challenging times and beyond. I listen well and bring experience, honesty, and warmth to my work. Along with what’s going on now, we talk about past events and relationships that are part of your story, exploring how they may be making themselves felt in the present. Doing this thoughtfully together can open doors to better relationships with yourself, other people and the world.

Are you struggling to cope with uncertainty and change? I work with those who are feeling anxious about the future, career adjustments, breakups, learning boundary setting, aging parents, or are practicing vulnerability in relationships. The people I work with are often second generation or queer folks who both celebrate these identities and are recovering from societal messaging. I also work with artists exploring personal expression, as well as people who are looking to rebuild community and relationships after impacts of the pandemic.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
