As life’s stressors being to build coping on your own can become challenging. Without proper support stress related to relationships, job/school issues, family and financial obligations can negatively impact your emotional wellbeing. In therapy, you can learn effective approaches to coping, support processing your emotions, help solving problems and making healthy decisions for yourself and your family. Children and teens struggling with peer, academic, behavioral or self-esteem issues can learn social, emotional and educational skills which can facilitate better success and a more positive self-image.

Accepting new clients for weekends, late evenings, and week days. Confused by what all the acronyms are behind the therapists names? Aren't they all just therapists? Realizing that in every therapy profile they describe their self as "eclectic".... How about trying to understand where you fall on a sliding scale but wondering how your insurance could play effect? What is therapy?.... Life throws a lot at us and it always seems to occur all at once, leaving us with unanswered questions and lack of support. I'm here to help make sense of it all and get us to where we mentally deserve to be at this time in our life.

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?Trust that your within you lies personal power. You may not have fully tapped into that yet and that is okay. Self compassion goes a long way and we are all met with challenges we don’t understand. It can be very confusing. I say “the deeper the cut, the deeper the ability to start healing.” The key to unlocking our potential is to be open to seeing life in a different lens. I practice Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which helps you reprogram your brain and alter thought patterns. When you change your thoughts, you change your world.

Disconnection from our true selves may lead to issues communicating with loved ones, career dissatisfaction, decreased sense of self-worth, substance use, or playing a role in this world you never asked for.
Establishing yourself, and your identity, is a lifelong process. You are not alone when you face questions including: Who am I? What is my purpose? Who do I want in my life? What do I stand for? Why am I here? When we consider these questions, along with countless others branching from these, you might find yourself overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, or frustrated. Attempting to navigate this process, you may face societal expectations, dysfunctional family dynamics, economic challenges or other stressors operating against you. While desire to be stable, authentic, and true to self is shared, your story will always be unique.

Are you struggling with anxiety, sadness, feelings of loneliness or emptiness, or substance use? Are your relationships with family, friends, or others important to you being strained or affected? Are you having problems getting things done in your daily life? If so, you are not alone. For the past 20 years, I have been working with people from diverse backgrounds with unique circumstances, just like yours. I have learned that the quality of the relationship people have with their therapists is often the most important factor in helping people make the changes needed to improve their lives.

After 27 years as a high school teacher, I followed my long-held interest and returned to school to become a licensed social worker (LMSW) and a substance abuse counselor (CASAC.) I work with clients who are suffering from anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma, substance abuse, ADHD/ADD and I also work with couples. I primarily use CBT, ACT and DBT. Data shows that most people who experience substance use disorders also meet the criteria for a mental health disorder such as depression, anxiety, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (70-80%), or some form of trauma (50%.) Treating substance abuse means treating the whole person.

I have experience working with the LGBTQ community, specifically trans folks (adults, children, and their families), mood and anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, as well as family dynamics.
At times, it can feel like the world is spinning out of control. Whether it be our personal and professional lives, interpersonal relationships, navigating a series of collective and systemic traumas, or a mixture of these things. Sometimes we are looking for ways to improve our situation, other times we are looking to find acceptance and to sit with what's out of our control. Sometimes we can find ways to distract from these things, and then there are instances where we need to face them head on. How do we know what we need to do, and when?

As your therapist I will see you as the whole and dynamic person you are. I will help you discover which pieces of your story are authentically your own and which pieces no longer (or never) served you. This journey is one that I am excited to embark upon with you while respecting the fact that you are indeed the expert on your narrative. I will be here for you to discover where the authenticity within your narrative may have been lost, perhaps even without your knowledge. Your needs and goals will be of primary importance as we work together to find solutions for those aspects of your narrative that are causing you distress.

I am a clear and goal oriented therapist that focuses on emotions, cognitions and behavior. I have over 25 years experience with helping clients break free from old patterns and find healing, solace and peace by breaking the bonds of the past. I specialize in trauma, OCD and family counseling. I utilize cognitive processing therapy, a 12 session evidence based approach geared toward healing in the wake of a trauma. I also run ongoing trauma recovery groups, with a focus on helping the client reclaim themselves. I am currently authoring a book on thought-dropping, an approach to break the ruminative patterns that fuel OCD.

I work with individuals to help them increase self-awareness and lead happier lives. My unique background makes me different than most therapists. In addition to being a licensed therapist, I have a PhD in Philosophy. As a therapist and life coach, I help individuals struggling in particular with relationships, codependency, sexual compulsivity, and substance/alcohol abuse. I also work with adult children of alcoholics, those who grew up in families where emotional chaos and parental addiction may affect their current lives. Unrecognized trauma can result from this. In addition, I work with gay individuals and couples.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
