I believe that effective Psychotherapy is the result of many factors. Two of the most important factors, in my experience, are: Technical Competence of the Psychologist and the Therapeutic Match of Client and Psychologist. The Psychologist's Technical Competence develops from the Psychologist's education, ongoing training, and clinical experience. A good Therapeutic Match enables the client to feel confident in and comfortable with the Psychologist. In my experience Clients are able to assess Therapeutic Match within one to two sessions; on the other hand, it may take longer for Clients to assess the technical competence of their Psychologist.
