Through Acceptance and Commitment therapy and Narrative Therapy, you can find your center again and accept where you are.
Welcome! People are incredibly resilient, but sometimes need assistance in finding and trusting in their resiliency. I can assist people in setting boundaries, processing through life events, and leaving with a better sense of clarity. If you find yourself struggling and need a professional to hold space for you while you rediscover yourself or your resiliency, I would be honored to help you along the way.

Are you ready for life to be different? To be able to see a brighter path, one in which you are more accepting of yourself, healing, learning, and growing towards the life that you envision? Perhaps you are facing a life transition, a difficult phase of parenting, communication concerns in your relationship, or family conflicts. Maybe your child is struggling with emotional, behavioral, or academic functioning. A safe, warm, empathetic space for exploring your life challenges, identifying goals specific for you and/or your family, and building upon your strengths can bring you closer to the life you want, the life you deserve.

INVEST IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH YOURSELF. We all have a tendency to put others first, but in doing so we can sometimes neglect our relationship with ourselves. Let me be your advocate and show you a kinder, gentler way to treat the most important person in your life.

Therapy doesn't have to be what you see in the movies. As a therapist who understands that the typical approach to therapy can feel intimidating, I strive to create an impactful and enjoyable experience. My goal is to make sessions feel less clinical and more like a collaborative experience towards enhancing overall well-being or goals. By drawing from an eclectic approach, together we will create a therapeutic space that is unique to you or your family. I approach therapy from an open and curious perspective to see each client and their experiences as a whole.

I approach therapy with an integrative perspective, drawing from narrative and person-centered therapy techniques.
Hello! I'm truly glad you've decided to embark on this journey. Making the choice to enter therapy is courageous, and it speaks volumes about your strength. Your story is significant—it's woven into the fabric of who you are today. I believe that profound transformations often begin by understanding our pasts and nurturing the wounded parts of ourselves. In my practice, my aim is to foster a safe and judgment-free space where healing and growth can flourish. Many of the individuals I work with struggle with issues like anxiety, depression, addiction, betrayal trauma, grief, and experiences of abuse.

My name is Thorne (they/them) and I am a white, queer, non-binary licensed clinical social worker associate (LCSWA) offering both individuals and couples/relationship therapy in Durham, NC. My work is grounded in fierce compassion and a belief that everyone is capable of healing and feeling like they belong. It is my experience that one of the key elements of transformative therapy is our relationship; that we are a good “fit” and that you feel safe to share your joy, anger, grief, and tears. My style is gentle, attentive, playful, and person-centered–drawing from relational, narrative, and attachment-based therapy approaches.

Narrative Therapists

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds—perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
