Finding help shouldn't be difficult, but it is, and I want to make that process easy for you, from the first contact. I have more than twenty years experience in behavioral medicine, and more than 30 years in helping professions. Using a wide range of expertise and training I treat diverse concerns of pre-teen through older adult clients. By varying treatment with a number of approaches, I strive to tailor therapy to the person, not just the problems identified. I work with mood and anxiety disorders, chronic pain and illness, trauma, addictions, eating and weight issues, and more.

Primarily, my background and expertise mostly lies in trauma, depression, anxiety, and substance use disorder.
I believe Irvin Yalom said it best when he said we need to form a unique therapy for every person. We are all unique, our relationships and experiences are unique, and in therapy we need to find your own path forward in life. We can find that as a conversation between two experts, you being the expert in your own life, and me being an expert in this field. Together, we can work to help you find what you are looking for in therapy. Whether it is a skill and action motivated plan, or a space to emotionally process things regularly, or anything in between.

As a trauma survivor myself, I understand the life-changing experience therapy can be.
Are you feeling overwhelmed, having relationship difficulties, or possibly trying to overcome an addiction? Contemplating whether or not therapy can help? Let me say, this is the moment to do something different in your life. Whether you feel that your relationship is stuck in the same repetitive pattern; or trying to overcome an addiction; or maybe having difficulties in day-to-day life due to prior traumatic experiences. I can help you gain a better understanding of not only how trauma impacts our daily functioning; but how relationships work, and how problems can be resolved in even the most challenging situations.

I specialize in: Depression, Anxiety, Trauma & PTSD, Victims of Physical and Sexual Abuse, Relationship Problems.
I have seen people struggle for years with depression and/or anxiety caused by negative thoughts we have about ourselves from things we have been through in life, some things big and bad, others unintentional or seemingly benign. While we all experience challenges in life, you don't deserve to suffer and I can/want to help you find that relief. Medication helps, but is not the answer to long term recovery. Regular talk therapy can also be helpful, but often is not effective for recovery. EMDR therapy has been the most hopeful service for long term recovery I have found and the benefits can be physiologically understood.

I have been working with combat veterans for the last 8 years focusing on trauma work, substance abuse, relationship building and other needed skills.
We are living in some very difficult times. It's hard to take it all in and find healthy ways to cope. My hope is that I'll be able to join you on your journey of healing by using therapeutic interventions and skill building. I will use a variety of therapeutic interventions to help you understand how negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are linked. I use CPT and EMDR to work specifically with those who struggle with complex trauma.

Whether you have anxiety, addiction, depression, life changes, fears, mood disorders or trauma, you deserve to be a complete person again.
If you are like most people who come to therapy, you've probably felt like you've been running in circles for a long time. Dealing with the same feelings, thoughts, memories, and worries over and over again. In the meantime, you've noticed your life passing you by. What if you could start your life TODAY? What if you don't have to wait? Healing comes from the Latin word for 'wholeness.' To heal is to become whole again. We believe within the pain of suffering can lay our greatest strengths. And there is no part of you that deserves to be cast aside. We don't focus on changing who you are, but on creating the life that you want.

Robert’s specialties are substance abuse treatment, co-occurring disorders, depression, bipolar, anxiety spectrum disorders, grief & loss, and helping those recovering from trauma and chronic illness.
Comments from Robert about his approach to therapy: We all have times in our lives that can shake us at our foundation. Coming into therapy, whether if it’s for the first time, or this has been a theme in your life takes courage. I think to be helpful the first thing is to feel understood, feel heard, acknowledged, and validated. Next, it is to discover whatever it is that you’re facing means for you as an individual, then gaining skills with which to cope adaptively. I believe acceptance is the key to facing difficulties in life. Acceptance does not mean approval, it means we learn to live life as it is, not how we want it.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
