Everyone has some history that affects their mental well-being. Yours might be steeped in significant trauma, or maybe you believe you are “just carrying around baggage.” You might have been told that you need to “get your stuff together.” Or maybe you just need someone to sit and listen to you, really hear you, and help you process your thoughts. You think your mental health might be holding you back from being the best version of you, but you just are not sure how to go about changing that.

Going to a therapist is hard work. Just thinking about talking through our anxiety, sadness, trauma, or any other issues can be so much that we push the thoughts away. While this can work for a little while, our feelings cannot be ignored for long. Eventually it catches up with us. I am here to reduce those feelings by making counseling the most inviting and comfortable experience possible. We will work together to sort out what is distressing and ways to reduce it so that it no longer has the hold or control over your emotional energy, thoughts, and feelings that it once did.

You're an adult feeling overwhelmed with life, either generally or in specific areas. You know that you've experienced some traumatic things, and you have an idea that the trauma responses you have so far managed are now taking over your life. Perhaps you know you have anxiety, but everything you've tried on your own hasn't worked. Maybe the depression you've kept at bay has started it's devastating effects again. You don't want to be fixed in therapy, because you're not broken even if you feel that way sometimes. You want help learning how to cope with your symptoms, and you want someone to truly listen to you.

When a man needs to fix a car, he finds the right tools. But when a man is feeling unwell on the inside, our society says, 'Man up!' – which is never the answer. Men by nature are problem-solvers, but without the right coping tools, you might be stuck. Shame or pride can hold you back, but don’t let it. Most of the men I work with say going to therapy was the best decision they made to truly solve problems, restore hope, and reclaim their lives. Let me help you to drive your relationships toward intention, passion and purpose.

As a Marine Corps veteran and experienced clinician, I am keenly aware of the unique challenges of trauma and the inherent difficulties and hazards faced by individuals and families who live or work in under-resourced or high-pressure environments. This includes the often-overlooked relational challenges that traumatic stress can create, impacting connections with family, friends, and colleagues. I also recognize the significant toll these demanding settings can take on professionals, leading to provider fatigue and secondary traumatic stress (sometimes called vicarious trauma).

All of us need to feel a sense of worth; that life has purpose. It is often hard to deal with difficult life events and experiences without the support of a trusted, trained counselor. I believe in creating safety and trust for the change process. I have worked with individuals, couples and families for over 25 years. I know that change often means examining our physical and emotional well being and developing strategies to unlock patterns of coping that are not helpful. I offer an approach based on training, trust and a resolve to help others find better ways to live.

Scared? Uncertain? Feeling like no one will understand how you feel or know how to help? Do you think that even a “professional” will judge you or not understand what you’re going through? I get it… Making the decision to ask for help is hard- it takes courage. I think most of us would like to think we can deal with whatever life throws at us- until we can’t. … and the proverbial "shit hits the fan". My goal is to help you confront the issue(s) standing in the way of the life you want. You don’t have to do it alone. Sometimes we all need a new perspective to consider. In the most simplistic of terms, that’s what therapy is about.

Do you struggle with anxiety, depression, stress, confidence issues, past trauma? Negative thoughts or traumatic events, small or large, can shape the way you view yourself and those around you, which can lead to a multitude of mental health issues. These often include depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, substance abuse, relationship difficulties and other mental health problems. Everyone deserves a life worth living. Unresolved trauma or unaddressed mental health issues can prevent that from happening. I work exclusively with adult clients & do not offer couples counseling.

Through my experience as a therapist, I have learned that asking stimulating questions in a trusting, safe, non-judgmental space empowers people to process past experiences and understand how their history impacts them today. Over the years I have found there is no “one way” approach to therapy. My approach to therapy is eclectic, supportive and collaborative. My philosophical belief is that therapy is a place where you can reflect on how to best navigate your life. I graduated from Central Michigan University in 2017 with a Masters degree in Professional Counseling after being honorably discharged from the United States Air Force.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
