It is not easy being a parent, partner, earner or individual in the fast paced, competitive world of northern NJ and NYC. We can feel anxious, depressed, uncertain or lost in how we think and feel about ourselves, our relationships, our families, and our professional lives. We can want to make healthy and effective changes, but sometimes that can be hard to do alone and we need a trusted other that has the expertise to help us untie the knots we are caught in. Many of my clients are successful, but struggle with certain issues, including anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, parenting, and professional life challenges.

When you come to me, it's totally normal to wonder how therapy works. I've been in your shoes, feeling unsure about it all. Therapy can seem mysterious and overwhelming. That's why I focus on connecting with you and helping you deal with what's happening in your life right now. In my six years of helping people, I've seen how we can overcome anxiety, depression, and fears together. I've also supported clients dealing with tough situations like loss, family issues, and trauma. And just so you know, I'm here to support everyone, no matter where they fall on the LGBTQI+ spectrum.

Relationships are like puzzles, and I really love puzzles. They define us in so many ways, especially our relationships with what I call "The Big Five:" with our romantic partner(s), with family, with friends, with work/money, and the most important, our relationship with ourselves. Through open and affirming talk therapy which incorporates humor and a relaxed approach, I can help you identify and understand the behaviors and patterns getting in your way.

A common myth amongst law enforcement officers is that seeking mental health therapy will result in the loss of their weapons and job. This is NOT the case! As a retired police officer (25 years of service), I am familiar with and empathetic to the overwhelming pressures law enforcement officers endure. Active law enforcement officers, as well as retired officers, can maximize their overall well-being by accessing confidential assistance from someone who understands their personal and professional experiences.

Men's Issues Therapists

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
