I work with people challenged by loving someone who is addicted to alcohol, sex or drugs, or challenged by the life transitions of marriage, pregnancy, new parenthood, parenting adolescents, divorce and death of a loved one.
Marriage can be extremely challenging, especially if your childhood was less than ideal. I help couples learn to listen to each other and talk about difficult issues without being triggered by past events or experiences. These reactions can cause defensiveness, or result in attacks on, or withdrawal from, the other. I help change these patterns, facilitate productive discussions and help you get the love and closeness back in your marriage. Couples can heal, become stronger in their bond and rejoin in love even after an affair or infatuation. I have 29 years of experience as an insight-oriented psychotherapist working with individuals and couples.

Beyond my professional training, I draw on my experience gained from my own journey with individual therapy, a 10+ year marriage and an 8-year-old son.
Is anxiety, anger, or resentment keeping you from fully enjoying life or connecting with others? Do you find yourself struggling with life changes, low self-esteem, relationships, depression, identity (sexuality/gender), addiction, or trauma? Maybe deep down you know there's a more fulfilling path but challenges seem to hold you back. I'm passionate about helping you find a path forward by achieving your goals and building a life that feels meaningful. For couples, I utilize the Developmental Model by the Couple's Institute, including Initiator and Inquirer techniques to enhance communication.

I work with depression, anxiety, grief, relationship issues (pre- marriage, separation and divorce) and spiritual issues to guide you toward a more satisfying and authentic life.
I will work with you to guide you through your depression, grief, anxiety, relationship or spiritual issues to find harmony, comfort, health and balance. I work with an integrative approach. The outcome of therapy is usually greater self-knowledge, a re-integration of de-pressed thoughts, emotions, and beliefs, and a new relationship with self, others, and the world. Therapy often involves structured "talk" therapy, creative work, an exploration of your dreams, religious experiences, and personal myths.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
