I help my clients explore not only their thoughts and emotions, but also the physical sensations, postures, and gestures that come with them. This is important because tuning into your body can help you understand your feelings, thoughts, and life experiences more deeply. This understanding can support you in being the person you want to be and creating the life you want to have. Our work together can include therapeutic touch which can be profoundly healing because it enables us to get to the root of the issue by connecting directly w/the body which is where our stress & trauma our stored.

Let's build a safe relationship where you feel heard, accepted, and understood in a new way that is productive & healing. Let me teach you how to replicate that with others, and most importantly - yourself. I step in where people get stuck - your sincere intentions for change no longer have to be figured out on your own. It will feel new for you - a deeper sense of connection in your relationships and the practice of ‘balance’ feeling more doable. We’ll take it step-by-step, gradually facing past wounds that are holding you back from developing the confidence & skills needed to feel empowered today.

I help individuals (teens, adults, elders) in developing understanding and improved connection in relationship with self and others. I love sharing tools to soothe anxiety, lighten depression and repattern maladaptive habits (like ruminating in anger or worry). I have a deep well of experience and a calling for working with trauma, grief, and PTSD. I especially enjoy working with issues like finding meaningful vocation and expression of potential. My therapeutic approach is rooted at the intersection of contemplative practices, neuroscience, and relational models.

Are you wondering where your sweet child went that used to hold your hand and be a good listener? Do you feel tired, irritated, or worried when you think about your teenager? If you can relate to any of these questions, then I can help. I'm Emmy and I help teenagers set goals, feel better, and discover who they were made to be.

***Not accepting clients at this time*** Being a teenager, or the parent of a teenager, can be incredibly challenging. Adolescence comes with many obstacles. Issues with friends/peers, family, sadness/depression, anxiety, trauma, and substance abuse have become far too common in the lives of young people. The presence of a caring adult who can listen, identify issues, and offer therapeutic intervention can be extremely helpful in improving their quality of life.

Many people come to me with prior experiences of therapy that were not helpful. This happens for many reasons but sometimes it's as simple as it wasn't the right fit. A wise mentor explained that "all human growth and healing takes place in the context of relationship, from infancy on". Therapy is a relationship of growth, change, healing. Many people are driven to therapy because of suffering in current or past relationship. Often the most challenging and hurtful relationship we have is the one with one's self. The "right" therapist is one that makes moving through this vulnerable process possible and bearable.

Clients that come to me are ready to make changes in the ways they have been dealing with issues in their life. They want to change feelings, thoughts and behaviors in their presentation to themselves and to their relational world. They may seek assistance in changing relationships at work, home and with themselves. They want to be more resourceful and have more tools to dealing with what is coming at them. They often feel their understanding of their issues have been made clear and they feel they have choices on how to approach their issues.

If you're in the midst of a life transition, grieving a loss, struggling with anxiety or depression, you're not alone. Maybe you long to find more meaning in your life, communicate effectively, reconnect with what brings you joy, or have more satisfying relationships. Therapy is a place to clarify strengths and values, build insight, and learn practical strategies to make the changes you want. Understanding how you've been shaped by life experiences and what your underlying needs are, gives you the power to make more conscious choices, instead of repeating painful patterns. Whatever brings you here, I'd be honored to work with you.

"For many people it is difficult enough just committing to contact a therapist...but then, who is a good fit? Many of my clients indicate they appreciate my more 'active-therapist' approach. I offer effective solutions and provide feedback. With over 40 years of experience, I work with couples having communication challenges, those working through rebuilding trust, or ones who need improvement in their overall relationships. I also work extensively with individuals facing divorce, depression, or anxiety. Additionally I work with mature teens and young adults as they look to venture out into the world.

How can I find a therapist in Napa County?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the United States, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
