As a classically trained therapist working from a relational, humanistic and mindfulness perspective I bring many years of work across cultures and difference, communities and organizations which contribute to my understanding of the issues and challenges you bring to me, and my ability to understand and assist you in moving toward the change you seek.
As an experienced clinician I have developed deep respect and broad appreciation for the complexities of life and relationships, context and environment, mind, body and spirit. The primary focus of my work has been treating the social/behavioral and mental health consequences arising from persistent unresolved issues, trauma and life transitions for individuals, couples and families. I will carefully consider your needs and concerns within your unique personal context and collaborate with you on a pragmatic and sustainable plan for resolution and an improved sense of well-being.

I have been practicing and leading mindfulness meditation groups for over 30 years, served in the U.
Imagine sharing your most private thoughts and feelings, safely, and without risk, so that you get to know yourself more deeply. Neuroscience teaches us how emotions affect our behavior, how they are stored in the body, and how negative emotions can be healed. In my work, I utilize techniques that focus on the relationship and the feedback mechanisms between the mind and the body in order to promote deeper and more complete healing. I also help couples and families recognize patterns of behavior that contribute to misunderstanding, tension and conflict. My intention is to create a safe space that is non-judgmental, welcoming and warm.

What if your biggest struggles - anxiety, self-criticism, depression, to name a few - are actually doorways to freedom and lasting happiness? The inner turmoil you want to escape may be the very portals to profound self-discovery and expanded awareness. My approach blends modern psychology, powerful mindfulness practices, and a perfect dose of psycho-education sprinkled in for good measure. We start by exploring the root causes of your pain. Your life challenges reveal the unconscious beliefs, unresolved emotions, and past hurts driving your distress. As we release these underlying causes, you'll regain peace of mind and happiness.

I am influenced by humanistic, psychodynamic, and mindfulness approaches and utilize EMDR, spirituality, and expressive therapies including art, sandtray and music.
Looking for a therapist can be challenging. For those looking for the first time, I'd like to offer some thoughts on finding one who's right for you. While credentials and experience have their place, at the end of the day the most important thing is fit. I encourage you to "go with your gut." Do a phone consult. Did they give you space to talk? Did you feel heard? Sometimes what we need is feeling supported by someone who "gets" us. Other times we grow from someone who is able to challenge us in just the right way.

Do you find yourself focusing too much on other people's wants and needs while ignoring your own? Over time, living this way can leave you feeling used up, deeply stuck and way off track. So if you're someone others often rely on for support, it might be time to find your own person to talk with. And it's perfectly okay if you have a sense that things need to change, but aren't sure where to start. I have experience and a special interest in helping people like you alleviate their anxiety, relationship problems and burnout.

Clients often come in seeking more of, and for, themselves. It may be loss, transition, or relationship that brings them in, as well as, stress, overwhelm and/or a clear desire to grow. Regardless of the catalyst, all are wanting something more from life. Together, we can support finding more energy, ease and fulfillment in your experience. What makes you feel alive? What gets in the way? These are questions to ask when feeling stuck. There can be complex feelings of fear, disconnect and confusion, blocking the way to motivation, clarity and desire. With openness, compassion and even humor, we can find the way, to more wholeness.

I also incorporate parts work and mindfulness at times.
In life it is easy to become stuck in pockets of emotional distress and fall into patterns of behavior that block growth. I provide an empathetic and nurturing space in which to discover strengths and overcome challenges. I meet clients where they are and create a solid connection. I help them to confront their fears, work through their blockages, and grow into their best selves, indirectly lessening their pain.

I take an affirming, collaborative, strengths based, trauma informed approach to therapy. My lens is grounded in the understanding that life experiences and ways of navigating distress are dependent on one’s identities, internal and external environments, and social and cultural ecosystems. I utilize a breadth of relationally informed psychodynamic approaches to support clients. Although my therapeutic style is eclectic, integrative, and flexible, it is rooted in a psychodynamic theoretical orientation with a trauma informed lens, grounded in attachment theories and framed by social justice.

*Unfortunately, I am currently not accepting new patients.* Being alive is hard. Opening ourselves up to love, desire, and expectation inevitably leads to experiences of disappointment, anger, and loss. But we don't have to bear it all alone. With the support and witnessing of a therapist we can learn to fine tune our awareness of the layers of our experience and emotions to find the parts within us that long to be heard. Although not immediately clear, negative patterns that we find ourselves in again and again can lead to insight that unlocks our capacity to heal.

When a person feels safe enough to share their story with a trusted therapist, they will inevitably open to new ways of understanding themselves. It is through self-awareness that people are able to promote change in themselves and in their lives. I truly believe we are all capable of growing with the right support.

I have extensive training in many areas including Gestalt Therapy, Mindfulness Meditation, Somatic Experiencing, Focusing & Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy.
Suffering results from our disconnection from our self, our bodies, friends, families and world and the Divine. This may manifest as anxiety, depression or other difficulties depending on an individual's in-born biology and life experiences. I work collaboratively with each individual according to their needs and desires. I am most interested in facilitating lasting change at the deepest level.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
