I also enjoy helping you work through repetitive relational challenges stemming from early family dynamics resulting in attachment struggles.
When you are struggling with life's challenges, you want to get to the heart of the issues so that you can overcome the anxiety, depression, trauma, fears, anger, and other emotions that are preventing you from experiencing joy, peace, and freedom. There is hope that you can enjoy life, healthy friendships and relationships, and heal the ones that are troubled. Whether your struggles stem from primary/early family dynamics, or more recent developments, together we can build a strong, healthy therapeutic alliance to identify and achieve your needs and goals. I work with individuals, couples, and families.

For over 25 years, I have worked with children, adolescents and adults in residential, community, home-based, outpatient, farm and nature based settings. My passion for helping in partnership with my love of horses led me to psychotherapy with equine interaction and EMDR with equine interaction. Although I value, respect and integrate a variety of techniques, I find myself astounded by the horses' ability to ground us in the moment and reflect we need to see. Within this reflection emerges a powerful awareness that can promote new opportunities for insight, understanding and freedom from burdens and traumas previously inaccessible.

For over twenty five years I have enjoyed counseling individuals. I work with them to develop coping strategies which will improve their situation and empower them to achieve more satisfying lives. My successes come because I start where my clients are and treat them non-judgmentally. As essential as that is, I also believe in solution focused and cognitive behavioral therapy. My goal is for them to learn from therapy, not to make therapy a way of life.

My ideal client is someone who is higher functioning and has some self-awareness. My ideal client is between the ages of 25-40, struggling with managing emotional distress, and often has issues with relationships in their lives. My ideal client is in a place where they are ready to do the work, even if it's uncomfortable. Their needs are often centered around building confidence, improving emotional regulation, setting boundaries, and building healthy relationships with themselves and others. My clients desire to obtain peace in their lives, even if that means letting go of what no longer serves them.

I take a psychodynamic, relational approach to treatment.
I believe the therapeutic relationship is where the real magic lies. I work with clients around attachment issues/relationships, anxiety, depression, trauma, and psychogenic physical symptoms. A focus will be on how we relate to the people in our lives, looking through a lens of personal history as well as identities like race, gender, sexuality, and class. If there is an area of your life you are distressed by, curious about, or feel needs to change- let’s explore it. Let me work alongside you to find relief from shame, uncover ambivalence, and re-write your story. A restored sense of liberation is possible.

I am looking to help people gain insight into why they may respond to the world/relationships around them in the way they do, why they are feeling the way they feel. To help people create a narrative that is strength based and adaptive, to find hope. I hope to help clients start to feel like they have more control of their conscious mind, to step out of living life on autopilot and to find safety in their own bodies. In addition to trauma informed care, I am experienced in helping adults experiencing anxiety, depression, mood disturbance, emotion dysregulation, relational issues and adjustment to acute life stressors.

At the core of my work is my relational approach and my firm belief that we all have the power and capability to solve our life challenges.
Living life presents each of us with unique challenges and difficulties that can live inside of our bodies, often resulting in emotional and physical pain. Learning to listen to and trust our body's inner wisdom is an empowering experience that can help us to heal and find forward direction with our lives. While I utilize a variety of traditional approaches in my work with clients, I also use mind-body and energy psychology approaches as I feel that these experiences often lead to a deeper more empowering healing for my clients.

I am trained in relational, psychodynamic, systems, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Hello and welcome. It is never easy making the choice to begin therapy. Confiding in someone you don't know takes a lot of courage. With so many professionals out there, it can feel daunting and overwhelming to try and find the right person. A person you feel comfortable with, a place where you feel respected, a space of trust and safety. When I meet with a new client, my priority is to make sure you feel safe, respected, and heard. By working together, you will realize you are not alone.

In my counseling work I provide psychotherapy for children, adolescents, adults, couples, families and groups. My clients include people struggling with PTSD, depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. My relational and existential approach helps me understand and connect with my clients. I believe that the intent of therapy is exchanging "symptoms" for "coping skills." To accomplish this transformation, we need to understand our past to shed light on who we are in the present, where we have the power to focus on present issues and make changes that will influence our future.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
