Everything we do serves a purpose for us at some point in time. However, our goals can change and sometimes our once-useful behaviors become ineffective or even harmful. I often describe dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) as “common sense therapy.” Using familiar concepts, DBT helps people recognize when their behaviors are no longer serving them and teaches skills to more effectively meet their needs/goals.

As a Depth & Soul Guided Psychotherapist, I am honored to support you or your child on the journey toward healing. My style is progressive, intuitive, and grounded in education and theory. I use an integrative approach, with an emphasis on humanistic, psychodynamic, and existential practice. In my room we dive deeper and let the interplay of freedom, form, and spirit guide us.  We reflect gently on your experiences and allow the unconscious to roam freely into the realm of the conscious.  We make meaning as we gaze with curiosity at the unwanted patterns that arise in your life, from whence they came, and how you may overcome them.

Are you struggling with relationships? Does it seem like it should be easier to connect with those we are related to, those we choose to be with, those we work with and those we parent? How do we address unhealthy relationships, or unhealthy parts of relationships? How do we make better choices going forward? You are not alone. I often work with those who have had difficulty or trauma in relationships, and who want to heal and create change. Validation is a key component of my therapy. I want to truly see, know and appreciate the real you and your feelings. Integrity, self-responsibility and empowerment are goals.

Therapy is a journey and commitment to bettering yourself and it speaks volumes to your readiness for change that you are searching for a therapist. Clients I see most often are looking to seek relief from what often feels like the never ending spiral of anxious thoughts. They want relief from the physical symptoms that come along with anxiety, and they want to know how to worry less about the issues in their life that are consuming them. Often working on boundaries, anxiety management techniques, and processing difficult times in their lives or relationships can be the key to relief from many of these issues.

Being vulnerable and going to therapy can be scary, but I'm glad you're here. I believe that everyone needs a safe space to work through their thoughts, emotions, and feelings, and should be able to do so without fear of judgment. My experience as a therapist includes working with teens, younger adults, and older adults who struggle with anxiety, depression, and general stress in their life. I believe transparency is very important to the therapeutic relationship and allows both the individual and the therapist to build trust with one another.

Toddler Therapists

What are the behavioral signs indicating a toddler might need counseling?

Common behavioral signs that a child may need counseling include high levels of emotional distress or anxiety, learning challenges, interpersonal conflict, anger, or social withdrawal. Any drastic changes in toddler behavior or self-esteem can be indicative that a child may benefit from therapy. Seeing a therapist at the early stages of any behavioral changes can be most impactful on behavior, as well as helpful to caregivers who may receive guidance on what symptoms to look for in their child in the future, even if therapy is not warranted at that time.

Can a two-year-old see a psychologist?

Children and adults of all ages can see psychologists and other forms of mental health professionals, such as counselors, psychiatrists, and social workers. Families seeking therapy for their toddler should just be aware that any guidance they seek should come from a professional who has specific experience working with young children, as well as the specific modalities that are appropriate for young children, such as play therapy.

What is the most effective type of therapy for toddlers and preschoolers?

In general, play therapy is the most effective and common form of therapy for young children. Play therapy helps facilitate behavior change by offering an age-appropriate way for children to express their emotions and develop more effective coping strategies. Toddlers with specific concerns may benefit from more specialized forms of therapy, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy for children with autism or Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) for toddlers in families in which there is significant parent-child relational conflict.

What happens during therapy sessions for toddlers?

What occurs in therapy sessions for toddlers depends on the therapeutic approach being used by the therapist. Most toddler therapists will use some form of play therapy in sessions to encourage toddler engagement. In play therapy sessions, children are encouraged to use toys within the therapy setting to express their emotions; subsequent responses by the therapist and/or family members can help guide toddler behavior and behavior change. Toddler therapy sessions can also involve family therapy or Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), which can help improve parenting behaviors and reduce strain on families.
