Your Place To Heal! From relationship trauma, abuse, anxiety, addictions, depression, loss of self, or neglect, to Full-Hearted Living. Welcome, I’m Chava Abramovitz & I help women and couples find safety & acceptance within. Are any of these thoughts familiar? *I’m not good enough *I don’t deserve happy things *I’m inherently damaged *This good won’t last, it never does. These are ingrained beliefs but not facts! They may be coping skills that helped you get through life until today, yet they’re now keeping you stuck. You don’t need to stay here forever: go from coping to truly living by harnessing your untapped inner strengths.

As a biracial queer person of Haitian and Jewish descent, Dr.
Dr. Gottlieb is a NYS licensed clinical psychologist. As a helping professional she believes that each person is doing the best they can in any given moment and that therapy can help build on innate strength so that they can do more. Dr. Gottlieb approaches therapy through the lens that all people are whole and unbroken as they are. Therapy does not change people, rather it helps them to develop the skills they need to live in a way that is consistent with the life they want to live.

Together we create a warm, safe, and genuine space that each person can use to gain self-awareness and feel supported. We work to eliminate distress and facilitate personal growth to help the client reach their individual goals. Throughout this process, I place great importance on understanding the impact of a person’s identity, culture, and environment to best support them. I also believe collaboration, creativity, and humor are essential to the process!

I am also a proud member of the NASW-NY Jewish Social Workers Interest Group, working to combat antisemitism in the field.
I practice psychotherapy with a collaborative and integrative approach by curating evidence-based practices that work in accordance with each client’s needs and styles of treatment. Primarily, I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma-Focused CBT, Psychodynamic Theory, Object Relations, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. My approach is strengths-based, person-centered, and trauma-informed. I passionately work with clients to create a judgment-free space that, over time, becomes a haven for discussing intimate or traditionally taboo subjects.

I am queer, Jewish, and live in Brooklyn.
Do you want a non-judgmental space where you can show up as your full self? I'm Zohar, and I hold an MSW from Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College and an MFA from Boston University. Therapy has helped me better understand my own behavior and has motivated me to change patterns that no longer serve me. My positive experience with therapy has inspired me to support others in exploring their own narratives, values, and actions.

I moved to Seattle in 2017 after spending the previous ten years on the East Coast in New York City and Washington, DC. I grew up in Omaha, Nebraska as a Jewish gay kid who always felt “out of place” in a community where these identities were largely invisible. I also lost my mother to cancer at the tender age of 16 while attempting to accept my gay identity. As a therapist, these experiences have helped me develop resiliency and to better understand how oppressive systems can create feelings of loneliness, isolation, despair, and hopelessness.

Each person's life story is unique. I hope to help you explore the chapters of your life story that you would like to understand better and improve. These subtle changes can enhance your day to day life today. The first step is recognizing that you want to make changes and then having the courage to do so. I work collaboratively with you or your child to help you explore what can be done to make changes and relieve some of the stressors. As an expert working with the Latinex and the Orthodox Jewish population, I understand the intersection of cultural identity and mental health.

Jewish Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same background to be able to work together, but a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond with individuals from a range of backgrounds, as they will have experience tailoring their approach to each client—and will be prepared to acknowledge and consider the effects of cultural forces, such as discrimination, that may contribute to that client’s concerns. With a professional who has such training, a client should feel comfortable discussing sensitive issues without feeling that they need to self-censor.

How can I recognize an effective Jewish therapist?

As with members of any religious or ethnic group, just because two people happen to be Jewish does not guarantee that they will share the same values, knowledge, or experiences. A Jewish client seeking a therapist who shares their cultural identity, or for whom it’s important that a therapist share their religious beliefs, may want to discuss a professional’s Jewish background with them before beginning therapy. For someone who seeks justification for major life changes in their religious tradition, or in biblical writings, finding a therapist who is comfortable framing guidance in that context may be especially valuable.

Would a Jewish therapist have unique training?

No, but they should have the same training and certification as any other mental health professional, as well as experience with a range of evidence-based techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or mindfulness-based therapy. A therapist with this type of experience should be able to help any client feel comfortable and safe, which is essential for a therapeutic alliance. Once this is established, a potential client may want to find out more about the therapist’s Jewish background.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with Jewish clients?

A client can directly ask a therapist if they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and if so, whether these individuals sought counseling for faith-related issues or marital or familial issues in which their Jewish background was a factor. A client may also wish to ask a potential therapist whether they incorporate Jewish teachings and values into their own professional work.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Jewish therapists?

The directory of Jewish therapists includes professionals who have opted to share their cultural background on their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their background, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and/or communities.
