I am a registered nurse with over 35 years of clinical nursing experience, holding both a Master’s Degree as an Adult Nurse Practitioner and a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. I have long recognized the role of identifying and treating mental health issues as paramount to enhancing overall positive health outcomes, and the lack of resources to address this issue. My background in nursing and patient care has allowed me to gain expert understanding of the importance of education, health care policy, collaborative care in contributing to evidenced-based, patient-centered, and accessible care.

It takes a lot of courage and strength to enter therapy. I provide a safe, supportive, and positive environment where the sources of stress and life difficulties would be identified. Ways to work through and overcome life challenges would then be presented and focused on with the goal of improving one's life one step at a time.

I work with adults, couples, and parents to explore and heal through issues including trauma, interpersonal/familial/relationship problems, anxiety, parenting, grief, and disordered eating.
We all have the ability to heal from the experiences in life that have shaped us. The connection that is built between client and therapist allows for a powerful and moving relationship in which I can accompany you on your healing and recovery journey - in coming home to yourself. I believe the process of healing is a process of reconnecting with life, with self, and with others. With openness, warmth, and humor, I am here to help you to step into the present while healing and claiming freedom from painful emotions and fears, and to help you in understanding conscious and unconscious influences on your daily life.

I have always gained great satisfaction from helping people feel happier and in learning more effective ways to achieve more fulfilling lives. Those clients who are eager and open to learning more about themselves in order to achieve these goals benefit most from my approach as a therapist. I often focus, therefore, on insight, meaning, and symbols (including dream interpretation)in order to help clients establish a more positive and accepting perspective of themselves and others. In therapy, I work with obstacles against achieving these goals that include anxiety, depression, addictions, anger, and interpersonal and relationship issues.

Welcome. Do you feel lost or without direction? Do you feel beaten down and overwhelmed? Do you do for everyone else but yourself? Do you long for just a little bit of "me" time, but feel guilty or undeserving? Could your relationships use a little work? Are people taking advantage of you? Do you have difficulty saying no? Do you experience periods of sadness or worry? Are you self-medicating to cope with your problems by over using alcohol, using other substances or engaging in self-defeating behaviors? Well you aren't alone and many feel the same.

Welcome. Do you need a safe space to talk about what you're going through? A space to discuss what is challenging, confusing, upsetting, disconnecting, or distressing? Besides being seen, heard, and understood, therapy can be a space where you can work on your "stuff". This may be addressing your past; building healthier relationships; managing stress from the outside world; adjusting to difficult changes; increasing self-confidence; finding healthier lifestyles; as well as learning coping and wellness skills.

My clinical focus is identifying and intervening on patterns of behavior and thought that prevent individuals from being more satisfied or better adjusted to where they are in their life. We all go through stress, transitions, and hardships. Adversity is a guarantee. What matters is how we deal with the challenges we encounter. Besides having a strong background doing individual work, I also work well with couples in conflict. There is something satisfying about helping a couple work through issues that have been eroding away the happiness and satisfaction that brought them together in the first place.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
