Hi, I'm Rachel. Thanks for checking out my profile. I have been working as a counselor for 9 years. Through my time, I have worked with people from many different backgrounds. I work with clients from the age of 6 through adulthood. Life can be stressful and overwhelming at times. Everyone struggles sometimes. and it can be beneficial to have someone there to help navigate through those challenges. Flexibility and humor are important in life and in therapy, and I offer both of those things.

I have a deep passion for helping those who are suffering from substance use disorders as well as other addictive disorders. Through both a directive and nondirective therapeutic approach, I can help you realize how to identify generational trauma, current trauma, lack of connections, and maladaptive family systems, that so often lead to turning to substances or behaviors to aid in the alleviation of the symptoms of those traumas and attachment injuries. With a loving and secure connection, I can help you identify your goals, realize the steps needed to achieve those goals, and maintain long-term recovery in your life.

You are insightful and high-achieving, but you are struggling with confidence, coping with stress, or taking care of your own needs. You might have an idea of what you want in life but don’t know how to get there. You are taking care of everyone but yourself. Maybe anxiety, uncertainty, unhelpful thoughts, painful memories, or old patterns are holding you back. Perhaps you need to make a change, or you’re in the midst of a change and struggling to adjust. You want to gain deeper insight into yourself and your experiences, and you’re ready to change your “default setting” and start creating new patterns in your life.

Are you a woman struggling to heal from a traumatic relationship, or maybe a lifetime of traumatic relationships with family members, friends and/or romantic partners? Do you find yourself repeatedly involved with individuals high in narcissistic traits (i.e. superiority, entitlement, exploitative, lack of empathy, etc)? Maybe you struggle to find a strong sense of identity or worth, or keep getting trapped in perfectionism, people-pleasing, and a lack of healthy boundaries?

I am passionate about working with parents who want more connection with their children, or are navigating parenting a child with OCD or anxiety. I have extensively researched the correlation of family accommodation and negative treatment outcomes in children with OCD. I also want to work with individuals or couples who struggle with mismatched sexual desire in their relationships. I am currently receiving training through the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT), specifically in discrepancies in sexual desire.

If I have learned anything throughout my practice in this field, it is that each individual is unique in their needs and what they are seeking from therapy. My hope is to use the knowledge and skills that I have to help you find passion and purpose in your life while navigating the challenges that may arise. No matter what your goals are, my goal is to support you in finding ways to achieve them by utilizing your strengths and helping guide you through the process of your own self-discovery.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
