For twenty five years I have counseled children and adults through the grief process engendered by death, miscarriage and infertility.
I have been a Clinical Psychologist for 30 years, and I continue to be enriched, challenged and personally deepened by my work. My therapeutic style is to be active, engaged and empathetic. I explore the past, ask questions about the present, and collaborate with my clients to brainstorm solutions for the future as I work to help people find meaning and purpose in their lives. As Clinical Director of the Center for Loss and Renewal, I have an expertise in loss situations, yet I see many couples for relationship enhancement issues and do coaching for business success.

With 10 years of intensive, hospital-based experience in palliative care, I provide psychotherapy for patients and their loved ones navigating serious/chronic illness, as well as those suffering from caregiver distress, new or persistent grief over losses, and the difficult life transition aging presents.
Serious illness can be frightening and overwhelming. With so much uncertainty, a patient or caregiver can feel confused and isolated. I can help you through this difficult journey by addressing important illness-related concerns, including advance care planning, medical decision making, functional decline, emotional struggles, caregiving, life/family stressors, role changes, or bereavement following the death of a loved one (or upon other significant changes or losses in life, such as pet loss, divorce, job loss, or family estrangement). I also specialize in helping older adults cope with and adapt to the challenges of aging.

I specialize in treating people who are experiencing relationship issues, sadness, chronic or acute illness, body troubles, sexual concerns, bereavement, and trauma.
The most important thing in a therapeutic relationship is the match. Everyone wants to find a therapist who 'gets' them. I believe that therapy really works, and that finding the right person can be life-changing. As a therapist, I believe it is important to respect the choices that people make in their lives, and to listen openly and non-judgmentally. We all make choices that may not make sense to our friends and family. Therapy is useful for helping us to understand the reasoning behind the decisions we've made, and for facilitating change in our lives.

I’ve worked in many different settings when it comes to helping others, ranging from group therapy facilitation to individual therapy for an array of life stressors including grief, trauma, illness, family dynamics, and general mental health.
You’re feeling overwhelmed and don’t know where to turn. Things in life are beginning to pile up and it’s taking a toll on you emotionally. You need someone compassionate, empathic, and proactive to confide in and guide you through life’s ups and downs. You’re ready to make some shifts in your behavior and feelings about yourself, your family, your work, or your relationships. Resiliency is a part of the human experience and you have more of it than you know. We all have the ability to survive life’s difficulties, and with focused support and reflection, thriving is possible for you.

I’ve worked with those who have experienced trauma, difficult childhoods, and extensive grief.
Your goals are my goals! First, let's figure out what you want to get out of therapy. If you already know what you need, let's plan out how to make those goals a reality. I always strive to maintain a person centered approach, meeting you where you're at. For some, therapy might seem like a chore. My hope is that you look forward to our sessions together and see each one as an opportunity for growth in a place where you feel supported and empowered. I am always open to hearing what you have to say - this is your space.

Seeking therapy is an acknowledgment that something is in the way of living and expressing your true essence. Together, we will work to understand the inner processes and unconscious forces that influence and limit you. This will include developing a dialogue with your interior world, and discovering what your symptoms, patterns, and suffering are trying to tell you. Ultimately, the goal is to live with more imagination, joy, and freedom. Areas to explore may include anxiety and depression; grief; relational/relationship issues; family dynamics; life transitions, as well as understanding circumstances from a spiritual perspective.

I have extensive expertise working with individuals struggling with: intimacy/relationship issues, eating disorders, postpartum depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, loss/trauma, and parenting issues.
As a clinical psychologist, I meet my patients exactly where they are. We work together to bring about symptom relief from the issues that have led them to therapy; to change longstanding negative patterns which continue to get in the way. The goal is to create and sustain a happier, meaningful and more fulfilling life. I have worked in many NYC hospitals including Mt. Sinai and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, as well as a fellowship at the William Alanson White Institute. Using an eclectic approach, I practice cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal and psychoanalytic techniques to tailor treatment to each individual's needs.

I am a Clinical Social Worker experienced in trauma, adjustment issues, grief/ loss, as well as dealing with difficult emotions such as depression, anxiety and shame.
Most people enter into therapy to gain a better understanding of themselves with the hope of living a better life. This has become a major goal for many due to the aftermath of the pandemic. Are there issues in your life that are causing roadblocks or obstacles that you can’t seem to get past? Are you dealing with battles related to trauma, alcohol and addiction, sexual identity, depression, anxiety, or shame that are setting you off balance? One may have the desire, motivation, and willingness to move forward in their lives, but may need some direction and skills that will help navigate them through these complex experiences.

I have extensive experience counseling adolescents, worked with at-risk youth and their families to encourage pro-social behaviors, counseled terminally ill adults and their families, worked with adults and teens dealing with grief/anxiety/depression and counseled couples.
Encountering struggles in our lives is a universal part of our humanity. Sometimes we feel overwhelmed and alone, whether going through a painful breakup, dealing with grief from a tragic loss, coping with the pressures of career or chronic illness, or dealing with family and relationship situations. Sometimes we just need someone to talk to, who is impartial, can listen, and who can help us somehow make sense of it all. Therapy can act as a bridge of compassion and hope, to get us through to the other side to a greater understanding of our authentic selves and to help us reach the potential to live our best lives.

I help individuals heal from losses.
Are you in the midst of a life transition-divorce, illness or loss? Are you a parent who wants to protect your child from the fallout of divorce? Do you have a child with special needs that is a challenge to parent? Are you looking to break out of a longstanding pattern of behavior that doesn't serve you well? Are you in a relationship that is painful and you don't know if it can be healed? Are you struggling with issues of infertility or thinking about adoption? Facing these issues and challenges can be daunting. I work with individuals to help them connect to their own capacity for transformation and growth. With the help of therapy people can develop tools and discover resilience that they can use now and in the future to overcome challenges that stand in the way of satisfaction, happiness, and a more fulfilling life.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
