People come to therapy because they want to feel better. It might be relationship problems or anxiety/depression, but whatever the reason, life has become uncomfortable or painful. Most people want more understanding of themselves and their situation. That being said, change is what we all seek in therapy. Making your life work better is the goal. I focus on altering self-defeating ways, gaining perspective, and increasing insight that leads to change. The result is an improved quality of life.

As a therapist, I focus on helping individuals heal, become inspired, and aware of their inner strengths. I firmly believe that every one of us has the ability to overcome our struggles and reach our full potential. The first step in this journey is to listen. I prioritize creating a safe and non-judgmental space for my clients to share their concerns, fears, and goals. Opening up to a stranger can be intimidating, so I strive to build a trusting and supportive relationship with my clients.

I specialize in the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and extreme OCD. I also work with trauma and other mood disorders. I am open and honest with my clients about my own personal mental health struggles as I too have BPD and other mental health conditions. I use self-disclosure to help validate clients’ experiences and also dispel some of the mystique one may feel about me as a clinician. We are all equal in terms of needing help to overcome mental health challenges.

I am a licensed mental health counselor and I have worked with addictions, domestic violence, trauma, and mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. It is important to me to establish a partnership with the client, working with the struggles that impact their functioning which includes quality of life. Substance abuse, trauma, mental illness are all situations that compromise us, and keep us from creating a life of meaning and purpose. My joy comes from watching clients’ transformation as they heal or overcome the barriers that keep them from flourishing.

I believe that everyone comes to a time in life when they face their own personal “truth in the room”. This can be as simple as private self-reflection or as complicated as trying to save a relationship or marriage. Maybe you have a child who is out of control or a sibling who suffers from substance abuse. Whatever brings you to therapy, know that it is my goal to partner with you as you work toward personal growth and wellness. Strong individuals are able to have strong relationships and healthy lives with meaning and purpose. My ideal client is one who is ready to explore "who they are and to do it on purpose".

I have been working in the mental health field since October 2006, when I accepted my first position as Activities Therapist on a behavioral medicine center. I have now been practicing independently since 2011. I have seen a broad spectrum of clients throughout my time as a mental health counselor, children and adults, and I have learned through these experiences that the client holds the key. My efforts are to encourage empowerment and strength to implement the changes addressed during therapy, and improve your overall quality of life.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
